2012-13 Turkish Airlines Euroleague Draw results
Draw RS 2012-13The draw for the 2012-13 Turkish Airlines Euroleague Regular Season and the Euroleague Qualifying Rounds Friday set the wheels in motion for another spectacular edition of the continent’s best basketball. One significant change to the competition format mean that this will be the only draw for the season and teams and fans can start marking their calendars with game nights all the way through the 2013 Final Four in London. The new season will feature a longer Top 16 phase, to which teams will qualify directly, without another draw. All told, the teams that reach London will play between 29 and 31 games this season. Moreover, the days of the games themselves will shift with the weekly calendar moving to all games being played on Thursdays and Fridays. The first action will be the qualifying rounds, in which eight teams will clash for one available ticket to the 2012-13 regular season. The qualifying round will be played between September 25 and 28 at Desio, Italy.

The regular season, featuring four groups of six teams, will commence on October 11 and last through December 14, 2012. The top four teams from each group will advance to the new, longer Top 16, which allows for more games pitting the top teams in the competition against one another. The Top 16 sees two groups of eight play out a 14-game schedule between December 27, 2012 and April 5, 2013, after which the best four in each group graduate into always-dramatic best-of-five playoffs series. The playoffs, scheduled between April 9 to 25, set the stage for the 2013 Turkish Airlines Euroleague Final Four, which for the first time will take place at The O2 in the British capital from May 10 and 12.

Also on Friday, Dusan Ivkovic picked up his Alexander Gomelskiy Coach of the Year award in a ceremony before the draw. Ivkovic led Olympiacos to the 2011-12 Turkish Airlines Euroleague title before walking off the European club stage as the only coach to lift all major European trophies - Euroleague, Eurocup, Saporta Cup and Korac Cup. At age 68, Ivkovic has also become the oldest coach to win the Euroleague title. Before that, Olympiacos Piraeus co-owners Panayotis and George Angelopoulos shared Euroleague Basketball’s 2011-12 Executive of the Year award. The Angelopoulos brothers struck gold this season by changing the direction of the team in several bold strokes.

Euroleague President and CEO Jordi Bertomeu presented a special executive award in memorian to the late Enzo Lefebre, who passed away earlier on this year. His widow Irmgard received the award to a respectful ovation. Lefebre, a longtime club executive in Italy, participated in the founding of Euroleague Basketball in 2000 and was most recently the vice president of Benetton Basket.

The Devotion Marketing Awards were also unveiled before the draw. Unicaja Malaga was given the Gold Devotion award for the second time, after having already received that honour in 2007. CSKA Moscow and Olympiacos received the Silver and Bronze Devotion awards, respectively.
