AUSTRALIA
A healthy mix of size, speed, shooting, ballhandling, youth and experience makes Australia, which has reached the quarterfinals or better in eight of the last nine Olympic Games, a solid shot to do so again in London. Led by captain and reigning Eurocup champ Matt Nielsen of Khimki Moscow Region, the Boomers have plenty experience in the frontcourt, with sweet-shooting David Andersen and banger Aleks Maric, former All-Euroleague first-teamers who share four Euroleague titles between them. Smooth point guard Patty Mills has a fastbreak running-mate in Brad Newley, a Eurocup finalist with Valencia last season, and an attacking backup in Matthew Dellavedova. Australia's x-factor is F.C. Barcelona Regal forward Joe Ingles, a dangerous long-range shooter who also plays point forward, as can Nielsen, giving Australia unique tactical options. If they can defend well and rebound, the Boomers are ready to run with Mills, Newley and Ingles. How many easy points they get will influence how far Australia goes.
