RUSSIA
Since it started playing as an independent country in 1994, Russia has a pair of World Championships silver medals plus gold and bronze from EuroBaskets. Now, it takes those medal hopes to the Olympics after qualifying with strong play earlier this summer. Russia's head coach, David Blatt of Maccabi Electra Tel Aviv, has a born leader in Andrei Kirilenko, the Turkish Airlines Euroleague MVP last season with CSKA Moscow. He joins five of his CSKA teammates from last season: Sasha Kaun, Anton Ponkrashov, Evgeny Voronov, Alexey Shved and Viktor Khryapa, a former All-Euroleague first-teamer. There are also three current Eurocup champions from Khimki Moscow Region: Vitaly Fridzon, Dmitry Khvostov and Sergey Monya. They all know center Timofey Mozgov well from having played with him on Khimki, too. Only two players - Sergey Karasev and Semen Antonov - have not been with CSKA or Khimki, which means that familiarity should be a major strength for Russia.
