Panathinaikos opens new court at local detention center

Panathinaikos Superfoods Athens has continued its work with One Team, Euroleague Basketball’s social responsibility program, by opening a new basketball court at the Corinth Juvenile Detention Center.

The Greek giant has spent a third consecutive season partnering with the Center, guided by the belief that sport is a universal language and working under the motto ‘Basketball is Everywhere!’

And with the valuable support of club sponsor Superfoods, the unveiling of the new court is the latest stage of a long-term project that promotes the values of sport and gives a way out to children from their difficult daily lives.

The club’s Managing Director Panagiotis Triantopoulos, Academy Director Fragiskos Alvertis and Academy Coach Yiannis Sioutis were all present at the opening ceremony, along with the General Manager of Superfoods Natural Supplements, Stavroula Chasagoglou, and representatives of the local police, the army and the church, who were all greeted by the Director of the Center, Antonis Tsourakis.

Welcoming the completion of the court’s construction, Triantopoulos said: “In the three years we have visited the Corinth Juvenile Detention Center as part of One Team, we have realised how positively this program is impacting the children, how much happiness it brings and how much we help them understand the principles of team spirit and athletic spirit.

“We promised to do everything we can to create a beautiful basketball court and today I feel great joy that this work has been completed. I want to thank both EuroLeague and Superfoods for their best efforts to get this done. Panathinaikos will always be next to our vulnerable social groups and anybody that needs help.”

Chasagoglou added: “Superfoods and Panathinaikos have the pleasure of participating in programs with such a positive social impact. Sport gives you this push to go forward and improve your life. The court is amazing. It has colour, it gives the children a way out of their daily situations and makes us all want to participate.”

Panathinaikos has also worked during the season with the Center, with EuroLeague’s all-time leading rebounder Ioannis Bourousis on hand to support the program as the club’s One Team Ambassador.

With the aim of overcoming social exclusion by establishing trust, confidence and teamwork, the eight-week project involved engaging with a group of young people, aged 15-18.

During these sessions the coaches wanted to involve participants with the aim of stimulating discussion, helping them to understand their motivation and roles in each of the exercises. Above all, the sessions introduced them to the world of basketball, bringing them into contact with players like Bourousis and allowing everyone to following the guiding principle: basketball is everywhere!

One Team, supported by Turkish Airlines as the One Team Founding Patron and with the collaboration of Special Olympics as Proud Partner, uses basketball to achieve real social impact in our communities.

Since its founding in 2012, the One Team programme has reached already directly and indirectly 12,000 participants through its various team projects.
