2006-07 SERBIAN LEAGUE PREVIEW
The brand new Serbian League starts once the country part ways with Montenegro, which became an independent country earlier this year. The competition system will be similar, however, as 12 teams will battle each other in an opening round without Hemofarm, Partizan, Crvena Zvezda and FMP, who will be playing the Adriatic League in the meantime. These four Serbian supoerpowers, along with the top 8 teams from the opening round, will meet each other in the second round, in which teams will be divided in 2 groups of 6. The top 2 teams in each group will advance to the best-of-five semifinals and the winners will battle in the best-of-five title series. Partizan will be once again the team to beat, even when Crvena Zvezda is a serious challenger this time. Partizan kept most of its main players, such as Uros Tripkovic, Kosta Perovic, Nikola Pekovic or Vonteego Cummings, as well as adding Predrag Drobnjak, Milenko Tepic or Dusan Kecman. Meanwhile, Zvezda keeps improving since coach Dragan Sakota returned to Belgrade, putting together what arguably is its best roster in many years. Nemanja Aleksandrov, Vrbica Stefanov, Billy Thomas, Mirko Kovac or Petar Popovic join Milan Gurovic, Pero Antic or Nenad Misanovic to fight for every title available. Both teams fought for the Serbian and Montenegro League title last season in a title series which ended in controversial fashion. FMP are back with a young, talented team featuring Dusko Savanovic, Branko Cvetkovic, Predrag Samardziski or Aleksandar Rasic. Hemofarm kept Milenko Topic, Vladan Vukosavljevic or Nebojsa Joksimovic while adding Predrag Suput, so it will be able to beat anyone, anywhere. Vojvodina will feature Istvan Nemeth and Sinisa Kovacevic while Beograd will have its go-to guy in Gorjan Radonjic.
