German League Finals, Game 4: June 26, 2007

Brose Baskets champ German league 2006-07; photo: www.basketball-bundesliga.de Brose Baskets Bamberg are the German League champions. Brose Baskets held off a furious late charge from Artland Dragons for a series clinching 63-64 victory in Game 4 of the best-of-five finals series on Tuesday night at Artland Arena. The title is the club's second in three years and will see them return to the Euroleague next season. Robert Garrett came off the bench for 16 points in 18 minutes and Zelly Wesson was big inside with 10 points and 9 rebounds to lead Bamberg to the title. Casey Jacobsen, who was selected as series MVP, had a rough shooting night in Game 4, but still finished with 10 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists to help Brose Baskets regain the title. Adam Hess scored 21 points and Bryan Bailey 15 for Artland in defeat. After a strong opening period saw the Dragons lead 20-12 after 10 minutes, the visitors stormed back to make it 33-32 at the break. Bamberg's defensive efforts held Artland to just 8 third-quarter points, allowing coach Dirk Bauermann's charges to pull away. Garrett and Tim Ohlbrecht provided key support when Brose Baskets needed it most and when Artland big man Darius Hall fouled out midway through the final period, the visitors went ahead 51-58 and seemed poise to ice the game. However, against all odds, the hosts never quit and Hess cut the gap to 61-64 with only a minute to go. Still, Bamberg didn't fold and even though its players failed to score, they prevented Artland from doing the same and were able to close out the biggest game of the season and clinch the coveted title. 2006-07 GERMAN LEAGUE PREVIEW
The German League has known four different winners in as many years, finishing the Alba Berlin dynasty long ago. Current champs RheinEnergie landed a brand new star backcourt in Demond Mallet and Marcus Faison, as well as keeping the core of players which lead the team to win the title. As such, Immanuel McElroy, Aleksandar Nadjfeji, Guido Grunheid or Marcin Gortat will be back to play for coach Sasa Obradovic. Its main contender will be Alba, which built up its most competitive roster in recent years. Alba landed Will Avery, Ruben Boumtje-Boumtje, Chris Owens, Julius Jenkins, Koko Archibong or Johaness Herber to play alongside Demond Greene and franchise player Jovo Stanojevic. Brose Baskets Bamberg is back with its trademark coach Dirk Bauermann, as well as good number of well-rounded veterans such as Zelly Wesson, DeJuan Collins or Vincent Yarborough. Darren Fenn and Chris Ensminger are simply one of the best rebounding duos around. Eisbaeren Bremerhaven shocked everyone last season and the team should confirm its power in 2006-07. Judson Wallace, Nick Jacobson and Brian Jones are back in Bremerhaven, which added John Bynum, R.T. Guinn or Kevin Gardner to stay competitive. The Deutsche Bank Skyliners fully renovated their roster after an underacheiving season, bringing in Kevin Johnson, Travon Bryant, Eric Chatfield or George Reese to play along Nino Garris or Rudy Mbemba. Telekom Baskets Bonn, with Tyray Pearson, Jason Gardner and Jeff Schiffner, and the Giessen 46ers, with Ronnie Taylor, Reggie Moore or Aleksandar Cubrilo, should also become playoff contenders. All 18 teams will play on a round-robin first stage and the best eight teams will advance to the playoffs. Best-of-five quarterfinals, semifinals and finals will follow to get to know the German League winner.
