A-1 Bulgarian League Finals, Game 3: May 18, 2007
Lukoil Academic is once again the Bulgarian League champion! Lukoil swept the best-of-five title series by edging CSKA Sofia 97-99 in double overtime in Game 3 on Friday and clinched its fifth consecutive Bulgarian League title. Lamont Jones paced the winners with 26 points. Gjorgji Cekovski added 20 while Donta Smith posted a double-double of 17 points and 14 rebounds for Lukoil. Carlos Cherry had 22 points for CSKA. Free throws by Anguelov sent the game to overtime, 71-71. Cherry hit a six-meter shot, fed Anguelov for a triple and made free throws to give CSKA a 81-75 lead, but Jones singlehandedly led a 1-6 run that he capped with a driving basket that allowed Lukoil to force another overtime, 82-82. Back-to-back triples by Cherry seemed to break the game open, 91-85, but he fouled out and CSKA lost its momentum. Meanwhile, Jones and free throws by Smith and Georgi Davidov allowed Lukoil to get a 96-99 edge. Lukoil fouled on Dimitri Mirakovski with 4 seconds remaining, and he missed the second shot on purpose. Dimitar Anguelov missed the game-winning shot at the buzzer. MORE

2006-07 BULGARIAN LEAGUE PREVIEW
| Few teams have dominated a domestic championship like Lukoil Academic, the four-time Bulgarian League champions. Lukoil is back as the top contender to keep its dynasty alive, as it managed to put together a strong roster in which Lamont Jones, Gjorgji Cekovski, Risto Stefanov or Georgi Davidov return and ULEB Cup all-time top scorer Todor Stoykov is also back after several months elsewhere. Lukoil also inked Lamont Barnes, Bojan Obradovic and Thomas Mobley to round a deep, competitive team. Its main opponent will be CSKA Sofia, ready to bounce back from its recent past and try to win its first Bulgarian League title in many years. Players like Predrag Joksimovic, Greg Danielson, Adrian Pledger, Lior Lubin, Deon Thomas, Leo Palladino or Brad Traina all arrived in Sofia to make CSKA get back to its glory days. Last year's finalists Cherno More IG Varna inked Leven Belberov, Dimitar Horozov or Aleksander Bojic while keeping Bogdan Boev and skilled big man Sasa Topcov. Tundja Yambol will try to reach the semifinals, too, with players like Ninoslav Tmuzic, Martin Horozov or Detcho Koeshinov. All 10 teams will face a round-robin first stage, followed by a second stage and the playoffs, with best-of-three quarterfinals and best-of-five semifinals and finals. |
