Spanish League Quarterfinals, Game 5: May 29, 2007
Rudy Fernandez - DKV Joventut DKV Joventut became the last team to advance to the Spanish League semifinals by edging Gran Canaria Grupo Dunas 93-76 in do-or-die Game 5 of the best-of-five quarterfinals on Tuesday night. Joventut won the series 3-2 and will now face Real Madrid in the semifinal. Meanwhile, Tau Ceramica will take Winterthur FC Barcelona in the other semifinal, that will also start this weekend. Rudy Fernandez led the winners with 23 points on 4-of-6 three-pointers. Robert Archibald added 15, Lubos Barton and Elmer Bennett each added 13 while Marcelinho Huertas got most of his 10 points in the final period for Joventut. Marcus Norris had 24 points for Gran Canaria while Sitapha Savane added 11. Norris brought Gran Canaria within 55-52 late in the third quarter, but Huertas and Fernandez allowed Joventut to break the game open and cruise to a well-deserved win. Joventut will clinch a Euroleague spot for the 2007-08 season if it beats Madrid in the semifinals or if Tau Ceramica downs Barcelona.

DKV started the game with a small lineup featuring Barton at power forward and soon got a 7-2 lead that Gran Canaria erased with a 0-7 run that Vroman capped with a put-back layup. A three-pointer by Paco Vazquez, free throws by Ricky Rubio and a fast break layup by Rudy helped Joventut to regain the lead, 24-20, after 10 minutes. Back-to-back triples by Rudy made it a nine-point game, 32-23, but a technical foul on Vazquez allowed Gran Canaria to get back in the game, 36-33. Huertas shined with an electric driving layup while Fernandez beat the buzzer with a long jumper for a 40-35 Joventut egde at halftime. Rudy kept pacing Joventut after the break, as he had 5 quick points to which Barton added free throws for a 47-38 Joventut margin. Only Norris scored from Gran Canaria now and the guests entered the foul bonus way too early. Even with that, Norris had 5 points in a 0-7 run that brought the guests back in the game, 55-52. Barton and an acrobatic three-pointer by Bennett rescued DKV and gave their team a 65-57 lead after 30 intense minutes. Rudy made free throws while a consecutive triples by Huertas broke the game open, 77-63. Norris kept pacing Gran Canaria, but he did not find much help around down the stretch, as Joventut managed to seal its ticket to the semifinals at the end of an incredible five-game quarterfinal series.
