German League playoffs, Quarterfinals, Game 5: May 31, 2007
Demond Mallet - RheinEnergie The last two teams to reach the Euroleague from the German League stayed on track to try to return by winning the fifth and final games of their quarterfinal playoff series on Thursday. Defending champion RheinEnergie Cologne saved its best for last in the the quarterfinals, downing higher-rated Bremerhaven by an impressive 67-84 on the road thanks to a 54-point scoring burst in the second half. Devin Green and Demond Mallett had 21 and 20 points, respectively, for the winners, while big man Marcin Gortat posted a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds, the latter part of a key advantage on the boards for RheinEnergie. The previous champion, Brose Baskets of Bamberg, dominated on defense to surpass Telekom Baskets Bonn 65-52 in the fifth game of that quarterfinal series. Casey Jacobson put up 18 points for Brose Baskets, which also got 11 from Steffen Hamann plus 10 and 13 rebounds from Darren Fenn.

RheinEnergie got off to a quick start and established its ability to stop Bremerhaven's scorers in an 11-16 first quarter. Bremerhaven straightened up and wo the second quarter, but still trailed at halftime, 28-30. After the break, Green and Mallett revved the RheinEnergie offense as it rolled ahead 42-51 after three quarters and then exploded for 33 points in the fourth alone - too much for Bremerhaven to overcome. Green added rebounds to RheinEnergie's 39-30 rebounding edge, while Mallett dished 6 assists to get his teammates easy baskets. Adam Chubb led Bremerhaven's effort with 20 points, while Charles-Judson Wallace had 12 and Wlaczeslaw Rosnowski 10.

Brose Baskets won every quarter of the game, starting with the first by 19-15, but arrived at halftime up by just 33-28. If Bonn was going to make a move, the third quarter was likely, but instead, Brose Baskets held the visitors to just 8 points. That defensive display boosted the lead to just 44-36, but demoralized Bonn's scorers. When Brose started scoring again in the final quarter, it prevented any kind of a comeback and took the series. Neither team shot more than 35% from the floor nor more than 60% from the free throw line. Brose took advantage of a 33-19 advantage in fouls to make it to the free throw line 48 times to make 29, as compared to 11 of 19 for Bonn, whose only double-digit scorer was Jason Gardner with 13 points.
