Spanish League, Game 2: October 7-8, 2006 |
As many as six teams - Real Madrid, Tau Ceramica, Etosa Alicante, MMT Estudiantes, Akasvayu Girona and Gran Canaria Grupo Dunas - are still unbeaten in the Spanish League after two games. Real Madrid stays ahead anyone else by beating CB Granada 78-91 on the road on Sunday morning. Louis Bullock led the winners with 18 points while Axel Hervelle added 16 for Madrid. Gran Canaria shocked everyone by edging Winterthur FCB 71-74 in Barcelona on Sunday morning. Kornel David paced Gran Canaria with 15 points, Sitapha Savane added 13 while Tre Simmons, Roberto Guerra and Jim Moran each had 10 for Gran Canaria. Jaka Lakovic had 14 pointsin an emotional morning for Barcelona, as legendary point guard Nacho Solozabal saw its number 7 retired in a moving halftime ceremony. Tau Ceramica beat Alta Gestion Fuenlabrada 84-74 in Vitoria behind 24 points from Serkan Erdogan, while DKV Joventut and Unicaja registered respective losses against Akasvayu and Bruesa GBC. In other games, MMT Estudiantes edged Grupo Capitol Valladolid 85-82, Etosa Alicante topped Lagun Aro Bilbao Basket 85-87, ViveMenorca defeated Caja San Fernando 83-74 while Polaris World Murcia downed Pamesa Valencia 76-67.
Tau Ceramica stays unbeaten after 2 games by downing Alta Gestion Fuenlabrada 84-74 in Vitoria on Saturday. Serkan Erdogan paced the winners with 24 points on 6 of 9 three-pointers while Fred House added 17 for Tau, which led 44-31 at halftime. Fuenlabrada rallied in the third quarter and still kept a 65-67 edge with under 5 minutes to go. Tau found a go-to guy in House, who had 6 points in a game-breaking 13-0 run which sealed the outcome down the stretch. Bruesa GBC provided the biggest surprise in the Spanish League so far by edging Unicaja 80-81 in Malaga on Saturday. Bruesa improved to 1-1 while Unicaja dropped to 0-2. Devin Smith led the winners with 23 points while Devin Davis added 17 for Bruesa. Berni Rodriguez had 15 points for Unicaja, Jiri Welsch had 13 while Florent Pietrus and Carlos Jimenez each scored 12 points for the Spanish League champion. Davis and Smith led Bruesa to a mamooth 30-51 lead late in the first half. Unicaja used outstanding defense to rally and it worked, as free throws by Rodrigue got the hosts within 80-81 with 49 seconds to go. Davis missed free throws for Bruesa, but Rodriguez and Sanchez missed conecutive shots for Unicaja in the final seconds. DKV Joventut dropped to 1-1 due to a 72-63 road loss against Akasvayu Girona. Lubos Barton had 14 points for Joventut, Charles Gaines added 11 and 18 rebounds while Rudy Fernandez and Andrew Betts each scored 10 points for the guests. Fernando San Emeterio had 20 points for Akasvayu, which led 40-30 at halftime. Barton and Rudy got Joventut within 54-50 after 30 minutes, but the guests never managed to get closer.
Gran Canaria Grupo Dunas showed its good moment by edging Winterthur FCB 71-74 in Barcelona on Sunday morning. Kornel David paced Gran Canaria with 15 points, Sitapha Savane added 13 while Tre Simmons, Roberto Guerra and Jim Moran each had 10 for Gran Canaria. Jaka Lakovic had 14 points for Barcelona, Juan Carlos Navarro 13, Michalis Kakiouzis 12 and Denis Marconato 10. It was a balanced first quarter in which both teams exchanged baskets until Simmons stepped up with a triple, a big basket and a buzzer-beating bomb from downtown to give Gran Canaria a 24-25 edge after 10 minutes. The second quarter saw as many as six lead changes, but back-to-back baskets by Savane and Sergio Perez allowed Gran Canaria to get a 37-40 lead at halftime. Three-pointers by Norris and Jim Moran boosted Gran Canaria's lead to 45-53 late in the third quarter, enough to keep a 53-57 lead after 30 minutes. Lakovic and Vazquez led the Barcelona come back, as a three-point play by Navarro tied it at 63-63. Savane followed free throws with a basket to give Gran Canaria a 68-72 edge already in the final minute. Basile buried one from downtown with 12 seconds to go, Norris hit free throws while Basile missed a three-point shot in the final seconds. Real Madrid kept the top spot by beating CB Granada 78-91 on the road on Sunday morning. Bullock led the winners with 18 points, Hervelle added 16 while Charles Smith and Raul Lopez each had 11 for Madrid. Curtis Borchardt had 19 points for Granada. Bullock and a red hot Hervelle combined for 13 points in a 5-17 opening run which allowed Real Madrid to keep a 15-21 lead at the end of the first quarter. Smith went on fire in the second quarter, firing in three triples and adding free throws to make Madrid stay ahead, 36-41, at halftime. Borchardt led a 7-0 run which allowed Granada to get a brief 53-52 lead. Hervelle, Kerem Tunceri and Bullock made Madrid regain a 62-68 margin after 30 minutes. Bullock shined early in the final period and Madrid cruised to a well-deserved win, as Venson Hamilton sealed the win in style with a buzzer-beating triple.
