Greek League, Game 1: October 12, 2006
Andrija Zizic OlympiacosCurtains went up in the Greek League with favorites Panathinaikos and Olympiacos, as well as and AEK, PAOK, Panionios and Apollon Patras all posting their first wins. The defending champions did not face serious trouble to beat Aris TT Bank 82-69 on Wednesday behind 20 points from Tony Delk. Title contender Olympiacos had to strengthen its defense in the final quarter to fend off AEL Larissa 83-94, as Henry Domercant and Andrija Zizic scored 21 points each. Nestoras Kommatos fired in 25 as AEK posted a road win over Panellinios 61-66. PAOK got 21 from Blagota Sekulic to beat newcomer Egaleo 81-75, while Panionios beat Makedonikos 64-58 in Thessaloniki. In Patras, Apollon won the local derby 79-69 at Olympiada's expense and visiting Olympia Larissa recorded the biggest surprise, upsetting Maroussi 80-82 after a follow-layup by Savo Djikanovic at the buzzer.

Panathinaikos crushed 82-69 Aris in OAKA Sports Hall proving once again that it remains the team to beat in Greece. The Greens led by as many as 28 points as Aris struggled to keep up. Panathinaikos went inside early to Robertas Javtokas, who scored 11 of his 14 points in the first period. Tony Delk took charge after that, posting 20 points with four 3-pointers, while Sani Becirovic also added 11 from the backcourt. Terell Castle had 21 and Simonas Serapinas 11 for Aris. Despite falling behind by 13 points, Olympiacos managed to overcome the obstacle of mighty AEL, 83-94, in Larissa, where it was upset last season. Henry Domercant and Andrija Zizic led the scoring with 21 points each, while Alex Acker filled the stats-sheet with 14 points, 7 assists, 5 rebounds and 4 blocks. Sofoklis Schortsianitis helped the Reds to remain close during the first half scoring 9 of his 10 points in that time. For Larissa, Arthur Lee scored 20, Zlatko Bolic contributed 14 off the bench and Giorgos Pavlidis added 12.

AEK was down for three quarters, but thanks to a deciding 13-1 run, it posted a 61-66 road win over ambitious Panellinios. Nestoras Kommatos was hot with 25 points including four triples, Perkovic added 12 and Christos Tapoutos had 7 points and as many rebounds. Damir Rancic and Stephan Nadjfej had 18 and 16 points respectively for Panellinios. PAOK overwhelmed newcomer Egaleo with an 81-75 win in Thessaloniki behind 21 points from Blagota Sekulic and 20 from Vlado Scepanovic, who connected from behind the arc with four 3-pointers. PAOK closed the second quarter with a 19 point-margin, but then slowed down allowing Egaleo to edge closer, as Rashad Anderson threw in six triples on is way to a game-high 27 points. Panionios posted an easy road win over Makedonikos in a low-scoring game that ended 58-64 in favor of the visitors. Youngster Stratos Perperoglou was the brightest spot with 11 points for Panionios, while Dragan Doincin and Dragan Lukovski added 15 and 11 respectively. Dwayne Jefferson had 15 points and Anthony Dobbins 14 with 9 rebounds in a losing effort.

Apollon Patras was the winner of the local derby against Olympiada Patras, 79-69. The latter controlled the tempo for much of the game, but more experienced Apollon took charge in the last quarter. Apollon had four players with double digits; Bryand Markson 17, Costas Paschalis 15, Ivo Josipovic 14 and Slobonta Bozovicv 13 with 9 rebounds. Lewis Sims scored 18, Steve Burtt 15, and Costas Harissis added 12 points and as many rebounds for the defeated team. Olympia Larissa upset Maroussi on Savo Djikanovic’s buzzer-beater. Maroussi led by 15 before Larissa came through with 16 unanswered points, punctuated by the performances of Giorgos Tsiaras, Djikanovic and Corey Belser who scored 19, 19 and 17 points respectively. For Maroussi, Costas Haralambidis chipped in 21 points with four triples, Danya Abrams 18 and Alexandros Kyritsis 14. Kyritsis missed an opportunity to give the hosts the win seconds before Djikanovic's winning lay-up.
