Adriatic League, Game 5: October 14-15, 2006

TRIPKOVIC There are no undefeated teams left in the Adriatic League, since as many as four teams - Partizan, FMP, Cibona and Hemofarm - tie for the first place atop the standings, all with a 4-1 record. Partizan stayed strong by beating archrivals Crvena Zvezda 93-80 in Pionir on Saturday. Uros Tripkovic led the winners with 24 points, Predrag Drobnjak added 18 while Kosta Perovic had 17 on 6-for-6 shooting for Partizan, which used a 18-4 run in the third quarter to seal the outcome. Hemofarm also improved to 4-1 by downing previously undefeated Cibona 86-72 in Vrsac on Saturday. Milenko Topic and Vladan Vukosavljevic led the winners each with 21 points, as Topic added 12 rebounds for a double-double. Brent Wright had 14 points for Cibona. Meanwhile, FMP dropped to 4-1 due to a 71-68 road loss against Geoplin Slovan despite 16 points from Predrag Samardziski. On Sunday, Zadar beat Union Olimpija 82-76 behind 16 points each from Hrvoje Orsulic and Todor Gecevski. In other games, Zagreb beat Bosna Asa BHT 75-66, Buducnost topped Split 75-64 while Siroki Eronet thrashed Helios Domzale 89-73.


Partizan joined a four-way tie atop the Adriatic League standings by beating Crvena Zvezda 93-80 in Pionir on Saturday, in a rematch of last year's controversial Serbia and Montenegro League finals. Tripkovic led the winners with 24 points, Drobnjak added 18 while Perovic had 17 on 6-for-6 shooting for Partizan. Billy Thomas had 23 points for Zvezda, Petar Popovic had 15 and Milan Gurovic 14. Tripkovic, Drobnjak and a put-back basket by Nikola Pekovic allowed Partizan to get a 26-18 lead after 10 minutes. A basket-plus-foul by Drobnjak and two triples by Tripkovic boosted Partizan's lead to 40-24 midway through the second quarter. Thomas and Popovic allowed Zvezda to cut its deficit to 47-38 at halftime, and the guests reduced the gap even more, 51-48, right after the break. Partizan did not panic, however, as a 18-4 run which Perovic capped with a layup allowed the hosts to seal the win, 69-54, at the end of the third quarter. FMP dropped to 4-1 due to a 71-68 road loss against Geoplin Slovan. Stefan Nikolic led the winners with 17 points. Samardziski had 16 points for FMP while Aleksandar Rasic added 11 for the guests, who trailed 38-31 at halftime. FMP rallied in the final 5 minutes and free throws by Rasic brought the guests within 68-67 already in the final minute. Free throws by Gasper Vidmar and Chaz Carr allowed Slovan to win the game.

Hemofarm also ties for the top spot by downing Cibona 86-72 in Vrsac on Saturday. Both teams join a four-way tie atop the standings along with Partizan and FMP, all at 4-1. Topic and Vukosavljevic led the winners each with 21 points. Topic added 12 rebounds for a double-double. Miljan Rakic added 15 points while Nebojsa Joksimovic had 12 for Hemofarm. Wright had 14 points for Cibona, Jurica Zuza added 12 and Marijan Mance 10. Three-pointers by Topic and Rakic capped a 20-9 opening run for Hemofarm. Zuza and Goranc Vrbanc fueled the Cibona comeback, while back-to-back baskets by Wright gave the guests a 39-41 edge at halftime. Vukosavljevic and Topic led a 10-0 Hemofarm run early in the third quarter, but Vedran Morovic brought Cibona within 61-58 at the end of this period. A three-point play by Mance tied the game at 63-63, but Joksimovic had 7 unanswered points, while Vukosavljevic and an unstoppable Rakic helped Hemofarm to cruise to a well-deserved win. Union Olimpija dropped to 3-2 due to a 82-76 road loss against Zadar. Orsulic and Peric each had 16 points for Zadar while Juby Johnson added 15 for the winners. Miha Zupan had 14 points for Olimpija, Marko Milic added 12 and Domen Lorbek 10. Ivica Jurkovic, Saso Ozbolt and a final basket by Lorbek helped Olimpija to get a 18-21 edge after 10 minutes. Teemu Rannikko and Zupan shined in the second period to boost Olimpija's lead to 34-43 at halftime. Zadar rallied after thr break, but Zupan dunked it to keep Olimpija ahead, 58-61, after three quarters. It didn't last long, however, as Gecevski and Johnson combined for 16 points in a game-breaking 19-4 run which allowed Zadar to add its second win.
