Spanish League, Game 4: October 14-15, 2006

Charles Smith - Real Madrid Real Madrid, Tau Ceramica and Akasvayu Girona survived respective tough tests to carry on tying for the first place atop the Spanish League standings, all with a 4-0 record. Madrid needed an outstanding Charles Smith to beat Caja San Fernando 67-74 in Sevilla on Sunday morning. He fired in 3 triples and added a dunk-plus-foul in the final 7 minutes to singlehandedly win the game for Real Madrid. Tau Ceramica also had to battle for 40 minutes to beat Gran Canaria Grupo Dunas 81-84 on the road on Sunday morning. Igor Rakocevic led Tau with 21 points, while Serkan Erdogan had 8 of his 11 points in a 0-10 run which put Tau in front for good midway through the final period. Unicaja dropped to 1-3 due to a 95-92 road loss against Akasvayu Girona. Marko Marinovic led Akasvayu with 22 points while Carlos Cabezas had 17 points for Unicaja. Winterthur FC Barcelona also dropped to 1-3 due to a 94-84 road loss against MMT Estudiantes, which rallied in the final period to win the game behind 25 points from Will McDonald. DKV Joventut improved to 3-1 by downing CB Granada 69-76 on Sunday behind 12 points each from Rudy Fernandez and Paco Vazquez. In other games, Grupo Capitol Valladolid beat ViveMenorca 80-87, Pamesa Valencia topped Etosa Alicante 98-90, Polaris World CB Murcia beat Bruesa GBC 69-64 while Lagun Aro Bilbao Basket thrashed Alta Gestion Fuenlabrada 88-68.

 

Real Madrid had to battle for all 40 minutes to down Caja San Fernando 67-74 in Sevilla on Sunday morning. Venson Hamilton, Louis Bullock and Felipe Reyes each had 13 points for Real Madrid, but Smith was the man of the game, as he fired in three consecutive triples in crunch time and added a huge dunk-plus-foul to seal the outcome in the final minute. Demetrius Alexander had 22 points for Caja San Fernando, which led for the best part of the game and still kept a 65-63 edge with 3 minutes to go. Free throws by Axel Hervelle and Alex Mumbru gave Madrid a 65-67, while outstanding defense and a huge dunk by Smith allowed Madrid to escape with a well-deserved win. Tau Ceramica also stayed undefeated with a 4-0 record by edging Gran Canaria Grupo Dunas 81-84 on the road on Sunday morning. Rakocevic led Tau with 21 points, Mirza Teletovic added 18 on 4 of 5 three-pointers and 7 rebounds, Kaya Peker had 14 points and 8 rebounds, Erdogan scored 11 points and Zoran Planinic 10 for the winners. Former Tau player Kornel David had 21 points for Gran Canaria while Jim Moran added 18. Both players combined for 17 points in Gran Canaria's 24-10 opening run. Planinic, Pablo Prigioni and a three-pointer by Teletovic brought Tau within 44-39 at halftime. Peker shined after the break, but even when Teletovic tied it at 63-63, free throws by Tre Simmons allowed Gran Canaria to keep a 65-63 edge after three quarters. Erdogan put Tau in charge for good with 8 points in a 0-10 Tau run, as even when David brought Gran Canaria within 81-82, he and Roberto Guerra committed consecutive turnovers in the final minute. Fred House sealed the win from the free throw line.

 


Unicaja dropped to 1-3 due to a 95-92 road loss against Akasvayu Girona. Marinovic led Akasvayu with 22 points. Cabezas had 17 points for Unicaja, Florent Pietrus added 15, Pepe Sanchez 14 while Berni Rodriguez and Carlos Jimenez each scored 13 points for the guests. Unicaja led 68-71 early in the final period, but a 9-2 run allowed Akasvayu to get a 77-73 lead with 6 minutes to go. Back-to-back triples by Cabezas and Sanchez helped Unicaja to regain the lead, 88-89, with under 2 minutes remaining. Former Unicaja center German Gabriel followed a three-pointer while a fast break layup, while free throws by Marinovic sealed the win, 95-89, in the final seconds. Barcelona also dropped to 1-3 due to a 94-84 road loss against MMT Estudiantes in Madrid. Will McDonald led the winners with 25 points. Jaka Lakovic had 19 points for Barcelona, Michalis Kakiouzis and Gianluca Basile each added 14, Denis Marconato tallied 13 and Fran Vazquez 10. Barcelona had an outstanding first half, in which Basile and an outstanding Lakovic led their team to get a 38-51 lead at the break. Kakiouzis followed a four-point play with free throws to keep Barcelona ahead, 66-73, after three quarters. Pancho Jasen and Gonzalo Martinez led a 11-0 run which allowed Estudiantes to get a 84-78 lead. Barcelona did not give up, as free throws by Vazquez brought the guests within 87-84 with 38 seconds remaining. Free throws by Martinez and McDonald allowed Estudiantes to win the game and improve to 3-1 along with DKV Joventut, which beat CB Granada 69-76 on the road on Sunday. Rudy Fernandez and Paco Vazquez led the winners each with 12 points. Lubos Barton and Charles Gaines fueled an early 0-9 run which allowed Joentut to get a 14-24 lead after 10 minutes. Vazquez stroke three times from downtown to make it a 15-point game, 22-37, midway through the second quarter. Granada did not give up, however, and cut its deficit to 38-42 right after the break. Fernandez dunked it twice in a 0-9 run which allowed Joventut to stay out of trouble, 49-60, after 30 minutes. Granada never recovered and Joventut cruised to a big win.
