Russian League, Game 3: October 16-21, 2006 |
CSKA Moscow overcame a busy week and climbed atop the Russian League standings with a 4-0 record. CSKA started its tour de force with a 69-76 road win against SibirTelekom in Novosibirsk. Matjaz Smodis led the winners with 18 points while Trajan Langdon had 15 for the current Euroleague champion, which trailed 56-52 at the end of the third quarter. Langdon and Zakhar Pashutin shined in the final period, as CSKA entered the final minute with a 69-75 and sealed the win. CSKA had less troubles to down University Surgut 68-89 on the road on Wednesday. Langdon led the way with 19 points, David Andersen added 15 on 6-for-9 shooting while Smodis and J.R. Holden each had 11 in an easy win for CSKA, which led 39-53 at halftime and kept a safe cushion all the way until the final buzzer. CSKA finished the week in style by thrashing Dynamo Moscow Region 82-57 in Moscow on Saturday. Pashutin had 14 points for CSKA while Smodis and Theodoros Papaloukas each added 11 for CSKA, which used a 12-0 run early in the third quarter to get a 20-point lead, 54-34, and break the game for good. Khimki improved to 2-1 by downing University Surgut 83-92 on the road on Monday. Melvin Booker led the winners with 20 points, Alexey Savkov added 18 and Vitaliy Fridzon 11 for Khimki. Fridzon and an outstanding Savkov shined in the final 7 minutes to lead Khimki to a big road win. In other games, Lokomotiv Rostov beat Dynamo Moscow Region 84-73 on Tuesday and then topped Samara 81-67 on Saturday while Ural Great thrashed Standart 97-70.
