Greek League, Game 3: October 21, 2006 |
Olympiacos and Panionios retained their undefeated records after three rounds of Greek League action to keep a share of first place. The Reds registered their third victory at Apollon Patras, 70-85, behind Scoonie Penn's 24 points, while Panionios defeated Olympia of Larissa 94-67. Dejan Tomasevic led a well-balanced team effort as Panathinaikos bounced back from a shock loss to Olympias of Patras by beating AEK Athens 96-80. Aris also improved to 2-1 by thrashing Makedonikos 50-73 as Alex Scales scored 12 points. PAOK came up short at AE Larissa, 81-79, despite a big game from Vladimir Scepanovic. In other games, Maroussi downed Olympias of Patras 83-64 and Panellinios thrashed Egaleo 84-59.
Olympiacos started strong against upstart Apollon, taking a 16-29 lead after 10 minutes, but the hosts stormed back and grabbed a 38-37 lead at the break. However Olympiacos recharged at halftime and stormed out of the gates to outscore Apollon 12-27 in the third period on the way to a convincing win. Penn shot well, making all six of his 2-point attempts, and added 4 assists for the winners. Henry Domercant added 19 points, Adrija Zizic 14 and Alex Acker 13 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists. Ivo Josipovic paced Patras with 24. Panathinaikos pulled away from a 44-40 halftime score with a 26-15 third quarter to top AEK. Dejan Tomasevic led the Greens with 13 points, while Dimos Dikoudis added 12 points, Sani Becirovic 11 points and 4 assists and Nikos Hatzivrettas 10. Nikos Vetoulas led AEK with 24 points – including five 3-pointers – and 5 assists. Jasmin Perkovic had 16 points and 5 boards, Prodromos Nikolaidis 15 points and Nestoras Kommatos 13 points and 5 rebounds.
Aris improved to 2-1 by thrashing Makedonikos on the road. Aris's defense held Makedonikos to 10 points in the second quarter and then 9 in the fourth to seal the win. Alex Scales scored 12 points, Mike Wilkinson added 11 points and Jeremiah Massey had 9 points and 9 rebounds. Anthony Dobbins led Makedonikos with 11. With new coach Kostas Pilafidis seating on the bench, but not coaching yet, PAOK lost to AE Larissa. Vladimir Scepanovic put up a valiant effort with 24 points, while missing only one shot from the field. He also dished 6 assists. Dimitris Haritopoulos added 17 points, Giannis Kalabokis 13 and Blagota Sekulic 10. Arthur Lee led the victors with 17, and Lans Williams added 16.
