Spanish League, Game 5: October 21-22, 2006

Pablo Prigioni - Tau Ceramica Real Madrid, Tau Ceramica and Akasvayu Girona won their respective games this weekend and keep tying atop the Spanish League standings, each with a 5-0 record. Tau Ceramica showed its power by beating Unicaja 62-76 in Malaga on Saturday, taking revenge of last year's Spanish League finals. Zoran Planinic led the winners with 21 points, Serkan Erdogan added 13 points, Pablo Prigioni had 12 and Mirza Teletovic 11 for Tau, which broke the game after halftime and never looked back. Real Madrid had to work harder to beat Grupo Capitol Valladolid 72-63 at home on Sunday morning. Raul Lopez led the way with 13 points, as Madrid only broke the game in the final 8 minutes. Jaka Lakovic provided one of the highlights of the weekend, as he hit a game-winning triple to make Winterthur FC Barcelona edge Polaris World CB Murcia 77-78 on the road on Saturday. Lakovic led the winners with 21 points, Juan Carlos Navarro added 18 and Gianluca Basile had 16 for Barcelona. DKV Joventut had less troubles than expected to beat Lagun Aro Bilbao Basket 98-69 while Gran Canaria dropped to 2-3 due to a 92-89 overtime road loss against CB Granada. In other games, Etosa Alicante topped MMT Estudiantes 76-67, Alta Gestión Fuenlabrada thrashed Pamesa Valencia, Akasvayu Girona defeated ViveMenorca 91-69 while Caja San Fernando needed overtime to beat Bruesa GBC 72-77 on the road.

 

Tau Ceramica took revenge of last year's Spanish League finals by downing Unicaja 62-76 in Malaga on Saturday. Tau stays unbeaten with a 5-0 record while Unicaja dropped to 1-4. Planinic led the winners with 21 points, Erdogan added 13 points, Prigioni had 12 and Teletovic 11 for Tau. Jiri Welsch led Unicaja with 19 points, Erazem Lorbek and Berni Rodriguez each had 10 while Carlos Jimenez grabbed 11 rebounds for the hosts. Three-pointers made the difference, as Tau hit 14 of 23 while Unicaja made just 2 of 21 shots from downtown. Erdogan, Prigioni and Planinic hit respective triple to make Tau get a 18-23 lead after 10 minutes, but Welsch and Lorbek brought the hosts within 33-35 at halftime. Prigioni and an outstanding Planinic allowed Tau to get a 43-58 margin at the end of the third quarter and Unicaja never recovered, aas a big triple by Fred House made it a 23-point game, 53-76, with under 3 minutes to go. DKV Joventut had less troubles to trash Lagun Aro Bilbao Basket 98-69 in Badalona on Sunday morning. Dimitri Flis and Charles Gaines led 6 Joventut players in double digits with 14 points. Ferran Laviña added 12 points, Andrew Betts had 11 while Elmer Bennett and Lubos Barton each scored 10 points for Joventut. Gaines, Betts and Barton allowed Joventut to get a 24-16 lead after 10 minutes, while an outstanding Bennett helped the hosts to boost their margin to 54-37 at halftime. Bilbao Basket never recovered and Joventut provided some showtime, as Fernandez and Gaines allowed the hosts to seal the win in style.

Jaka Lakovic hit a three-pointer with 2 seconds to go to make Winterthur FC Barcelona beat Polaris World CB Murcia 77-78 and improve to 2-3 in the standings. Lakovic led the winners with 21 points, Navarro added 18 and Basile had 16 for Barcelona. Stephane Risacher led 5 Murcia players in double figures with 15 points. The final period saw as many as 7 lead changes, but 4 of 4 free throws by Risacher gave Murcia a 77-75 edge with 12 seconds to go. Lakovic asked for a screen in the high post and found space to hit the game-winning triple for Barcelona. Real Madrid had to battle for all 40 minutes to beat Grupo Capitol Valladolid 72-63 at home on Sunday morning. Lopez led the way with 13 points, Kerem Tunceri added 11 and Charles Smith 10 for Madrid, which had a 56-55 lead with 8 minutes to go. Real Madrid used a 11-1 run which Lopez capped with a fast break layup to add yet another home win. Gran Canaria dropped to 2-3 due to a 92-89 overtime road loss against CB Granada. Curtis Borchardt led Granada with 26 points on 9-for-10 shooting. Sitapha Savane had 17 points for Gran Canaria, Jackson Vroman added 15, Kornel David had 13, Roberto Guerra 12 and Tre Simmons 11. Savane and an eight-meter triple by Marcus Norris allowed Gran Canaria to get a 35-44 halftime margin. Borchardt got Granada back into the game, but David hit two critical triples in the final 2 minutes to force overtime, 83-83. It all came down to the final 7 seconds, in which Samo Udrih hit free throws for Granada while Borchardt had a big block on Simmons to round his perfect game.
