Spanish League, Game 6: October 28-29, 2006

Louis Bullock - Real Madrid Real Madrid and Tau Ceramica are the only unbeaten teams in the Spanish League, each with a 6-0 record. Louis Bullock had 27 points on 11-for-13 shooting to lead Real Madrid in an impressing 61-81 road win against Lagun Aro Bilbao Basket. A 2-21 run allowed Madrid to break the game open in the final period. Meanwhile, Tau downed CB Granada 72-51 at home. Igor Rakocevic paced the winners with 27 points, while Luis Scola posted a double-double of 13 points and 13 rebounds in his first Spanish League this season. Winterthur FC Barcelona overwhelmed previously unbeaten Akasvayu Girona 94-67 at home on Sunday morning. Gianluca Basile fired in 6 triples on his way to 21 points while Juan Carlos Navarro added 18 points and 8 assists in an emotional game in Palau Blaugrana, as Akasvayu coach Svetislav Pesic returned to face the team he led to win the 2003 Euroleague title. Unicaja used outstanding defense to beat Gran Canaria Grupo Dunas 45-62 on the road while DKV Joventut dropped to 4-2 due to a 77-72 road against Pamesa Valencia. In other games, Caja San Fernando edged Polaris World CB Murcia 70-68, MMT Estudiantes topped Alta Gestion Fuenlabrada 79-74, ViveMenorca downed Etosa Alicante 74-61 while Bruesa GBC upset Grupo Capitol Valladolid 73-81.

Real Madrid stayed unbeaten and improved to 6-0 in the standings by thrashing Lagun Aro Bilbao Basket 61-81 on the road on Saturday. Bullock led the way with 27 points on 11-for-13 shooting while Charles Smith had 19 points on 7-for-10 shooting for Madrid. Both teams were tied at 54-54 late in the third quarter, but Felipe Reyes and Smith led a 2-21 run which allowed the guests to seal the win in the final period. Tau Ceramica used outstanding defense to down CB Granada 72-51 at home. Rakocevic paced the winners with 27 points, Scola posted a double-double of 13 points and 13 rebounds while Zoran Planinic had 10 points for Tau. Back-to-back triples by Fred House and Serkan Erdogan capped a 23-7 opening run for Tau, while another three-pointer by Planinic gave the hosts a 33-20 margin at halftime. Nothing changed in the second half, as Tau kept a double-digit margin all the way until the final buzzer. Unicaja bounced back from previous losses by downing Gran Canaria Grupo Dunas 45-62 on the road on Sunday. Fresh from his best Euroleague game ever, Carlos Cabezas led Unicaja with 17 points while Carlos Jimenez added 11 for the winners. Marcus Norris had 9 points for Gran Canaria, which trailed 25-27 at halftime. Unicaja limited its opponents to just 7 points in the third quarter. Meanwhile, Jimenez, Jiri Welsch and Cabezas broke the game open, 30-49, and Unicaja never looked back. 

Winterthur FC Barcelona improved to 3-3 by overwhelming previously unbeaten Akasvayu Girona 94-67 at home on Sunday morning. It was an emotional game for Barcelona as coach Pesic, who led the hosts to their only Euroleague title in 2003 returned to Palau Blaugrana with Akasvayu. Basile fired in 6 triples on his way to 21 points, Navarro added 18 points and 8 assists, Fran Vazquez had 12 points while Michalis Kakiouzis and Rodrigo De La Fuente each had 10 points for Barcelona. It was a balanced game for 25 minutes, but Vazquez and Basile allowed Winterthur FCB to get a 66-57 edge after 30 minutes. A 13-0 run which Vazquez capped with a dunk sealed the win in style. DKV Joventut dropped to 4-2 due to a 77-72 road loss against Pamesa Valencia. Albert Oliver led the winners with 16 points. Rudy Fernandez had 20 points for Joventut, Marcelinho Huertas added 15 and Lubos Barton 12. Joventut opened the game with a 0-10 run which Andy Betts capped with a basket, but Pamesa recovered to get a 15-14 edge after 10 minutes. Drew Sullivan and Huertas allowed Joventut to get a 32-39 lead at halftime. Free throws by Fernandez made the guests keep a 42-50 margin, but a 13-3 run put Pamesa in charge, 55-53, early in the final period. Oliver had 10 points in crunch time to make Pamesa get a 72-62 lead with 3 minutes to go, enough to seal the outcome.
