Baltic League Game 8: November 10-12, 2006
Lietuvos Rytas celebratesZalgiris Kaunas got back-to-back wins this weekend against Sakalai and Siauliai and raised its record to a perfect 8-0 to be atop the Group A table of the Baltic League, while Lietuvos Rytas topped Ventspils in the group B big-match sharing the first palce with ASK riga. In the big match of round 8, Lietuvos Rytas edged 77-69 Ventpsils of Latvia at the Siemens Arena of Vilnius, Lithuania. Now in Group B, Lietuvos Rytas is sharing the first place with ASK Riga with a 7-1 record, while Ventspils is at the third place with 5-2. The guests took a 15-22 margin at the end of the first quarter, but the Baltic League defending champions exploded with a 31-12 run to lead at halftime, 46-34, and never looked back in the rest of the match. Lietuvos Rytas had a poor shooting night from behind the arc, converting just 3 of their 20 attempts, but their defense and rebounding were the keys for their success. The Lithuanians outrebounded Ventspils 44-27, and Joao Batista was their scoring leader with 11 points, Titus Ivory and Tomas Delininkaitis nailed 10 apiece, while Justin Love bagged 17 and Pavel Veselovs 13 for Ventspils.

Zalgiris is still atop the Baltic League group A table unbeaten with 7-0 record, by edging on the road 85-91 Sakalai Vilnius, on Saturday. The home team got a 23-15 advantage in the first quarter, Zalgiris tied on 38-38 with two minutes left to halftime, and had a slim 41-44 margin at the break. Back from the lockers they increased the cushion to 61-73, but suffered the come back of Sakalai that climbed within 75-77 with half and a minute left in the match, but Zalgiris remained in control and got a deserved win. Kirk Penney posted 14 points, Hanno Mottola tallied 13, Jonas Maciulis netted 10 while Paulius Jankunas contributed with 8 points and 13 rebounds. On Sunday, Zalgiris outlasted 85-63 in a match they dominated, by leading allready 44-30 at halftime. Paulius Jankunas prouced for 19 points, Tanoka Beard amassed 17 points and 9 rebounds, while Marcelo Machado added 11 points.

On Friday, the group B co-leaders of ASK Riga thrashed on the road 62-88 Atletas Kaunas, led by 16 points and 5 assists of Curtis Millage. On Saturday, Barons beat 67-60 Kalev Tallinn, Nevezys crushed 89-72 Panevezys, and Valmiera edged away 84-87 Neptunas Klaipeda. On Sunady, Nevezys thrashed 100-62 Atletas Kaunas and Neptunas Klaipeda outlasted away 75-92 Sakalai.
