Spanish League, Game 10: November 25-26, 2006 |
A blazing start and rebounding dominance against its archrival helped make Real Madrid the first 10-0 team in European domestic competition after its 90-73 home win over Winterthur F.C. Barcelona in the Spanish League this weekend. Axel Hervelle and Felipe Reyes each had 15 points and 7 rebounds, while Alex Mumbru matched their scoring by hitting 3 of Madrid's 11 three-pointers on the night. Tau Ceramica stayed hot on Madrid's footsteps by winning 75-80 on the road against Menorca as Serkan Erdogn and Igor Rakocevic posted 14 points each. DKV Joventut retained part of its tie for fifth place by rolling over Alicante 84-64 as Paco Vazquez popped in 15 points. Unicaja fell to 5-5 and a tie for eighth place when it suffered a 58-64 home loss to Valencia. Dismal shooting hurt the hosts, while Albert Oliver led Pamesa with 14 points. Tied with Unicaja is Gran Canaria Grupo Dunas, a 68-59 road loser at Caja San Fernando, which is now tied ofr third placw ith Akasvayu Girona, an 80-73 winner against Murcia. In other results, Bilbao defeated Estudiantes 78-67, Fuenlabrada downed Valladolid 88-72 and Bruesa downed Granada 77-59.
Madrid got a great team to take care of a Barcelona team whose record fell to 4-6. The hosts bolted ahead 27-17 after one quarter and used an 8-0 start to the second half, sparked by one of Mumbru's triples, to settle the matter. The Madrid his 20 points for the first time at 60-40 midway through the third quarter and topped out at 22 points, 82-60, late in the fourth. Seven different Madrid players popped triples from the arc while they hosts also ruled the boards by a 35-20 final rebounding margin. Charles Smith added 12 points for the winners, who had 43 points in bench scoring. Juan Carlos Navarro countered with 21 points for Barcelona, while Jaka Lakovic added 13 and Jordi Trias 11. Tau, meanwhile, had to fight to the finish against second-to-last-placed Menorca and its new coach, Ricard Casas. Tau used a 16-26 second quarter to lead 35-45 at the half but fell behind momentarily in the fourth quarter. Rakocevic hit 2 of his 3 three-pointers in the next couple minutes to send Tau on its way to victory. Tiago Splitter added 12 points for the winners, while Luis Scola came off the bench for 11. Sam Clancy led Menorca with 19 points.
Joventut led early and often against Alicante, going up 22-15 after 10 minutes and more than doubling the visitors in a 29-14 second quarter. That left a 51-29 halftime score that ended suspense about the outcome. With playing time to spare, 11 of the 12 Joventut players who saw minutes got in the scoring column. Following Vazquez, who hit 3 of 5 triples, came Marcelinhas Huertas and Charles Gaines with 12 points each and Rudy Fernandez with 10. Quincy Lewis had 12 for Alicante. Unicaja fell further and further behind on its home floor to Pamesa, by as much as 33-49 early in the fourth quarter, before discovering its offense too late to complete a rally. Besides shooting 2-for-16 from the three-point arc (13%) and 18-for-26 from the foul line (69%), Unicaja was outrebounded 28-35. A failure to turn Pamesa's 20 turnovers into more easy baskets hurt also. Ruben Douglas followed Albert with 12 points and pulled 10 rebounds. Unicaja's only double-digit scorer was Carlos Cabezas with 14 points.
Gran Canaria forced Caja San Fernando to come back on its own floor to win. A stellar defensive first quarter left the visitors in front 10-15, but their own offense flagged in the second and the teams were tied 21-21 at the half. Caja San Fernando solved its offensive problems and more than its first-half total in each of the third and fourth quarters. Demetrius Alexander and Antonio Bueno ruled the paint with 17 points each for the winners, while Marcus Norriss had the same total for Gran Canaria. Akasvayu got another big night of 19 points from Marc Gasol to down Murcia and Goran Dragic, who had 18 points. Fuenlabrada remains tied for fifth place after Tom Wideman's 16 points paced the victory over Valladolid. Bruesa is tied with three other teams for ninth place after handling Granada thanks to 24 points from Txemi Urtasun.
