Italian League, Game 10: December 2-3, 2006

David Hawkins VidiVici Bologna and Montepaschi Siena now share the top spot in the Italian League standings, each with a 8-2 record. VidiVici beat Armani Jeans Milano 83-73 in Bologna on Sunday night behind 25 points from Bennett Davison. Meanwhile, dropped to 8-2 due to a 74-72 road loss against Angelico Biella despite 17 points from Rimantas Kaukenas. Milano shares the third place with Benetton, which beat Air Avellino 92-70 in Treviso to improve to 7-3 in the league board. Bryant Smith paced the winners with 14 points in an easy home win for Benetton. Upea Capo D'Orlando and Whirlpool Varese registered respective wins and tie for the fifth place at 6-4. Upea edged Eldo Napoli 66-63 at home while Varese topped Snaidero Cucine Udine 76-63 at home. David Hawkins returned to the Lottomatica Roma lineup and had 28 points to lead his team in a 74-81 overtime road win against Legea Scafati. Meanwhile, Climamio Bologna dropped to 4-6 due to a 93-90 overtime road loss against Tisettante Cantu. Michael Jordan led Cantu with 29 points while Marco Belinelli had 25 points for Climamio. In other games, Bibop Carire Reggio Emilia edged Premiata Montegranaro 83-76 while Siviglia Wear Teramo thrashed TDShop.it Livorno 99-70.

 

Lottomatica Roma balanced its Italian League record at 5-5 by edging Legea Scafati 74-81 in overtime on the road on Sunday. Hawkins returned from an injury to lead the winners with 28 points. Dejan Bodiroga added 19 while Mire Chatman had 12 for Lottomatica. Jack Martinez of Scafati scored 18 points and grabbed 21 rebounds for a monster double-double. Hawkins had 20 points in the second half to keep Roma in the game, while a free throw by Bodiroga send the game to overtime, 65-65. Even when the hosts got a 70-65 lead early in the extra period, Hawkins and an outstanding Bodiroga fueled a 1-16 run which sealed the win. Montepaschi Siena dropped to 8-2 due to a 74-72 road loss against Angelico Biella. Reece Gaines led the winners with 21 points. Kaukenas had 17 points for Siena, Romain Sato added 16 and Shaun Stonerook 11. A three-pointer by Stonerrok gave Siena a 55-62 lead with 5 minutes to go, but Biella rallied in crunch time to escape with a big home win. Climamio Bologna dropped to 4-6 due to a 93-90 overtime road loss against Tisettante Cantu. Jordan led Cantu with 29 points. Belinelli had 25 points for Climamio, Preston Shumpert added 18, Tyus Edney 17 and Stefano Mancinelli 10. Mancinelli followed a triple with a layup for a 74-79 Climamio lead, but Casey Shaw and a wild triple by Jordan sent the game to overtime, 82-82. Once again Mancinelli buried a jumper to give Climamio its last lead at 89-90, but a put-back basket by Lamayn Wilson and free throws by Donnie McGrath sealed the win.


Benetton Treviso had less troubles than expected to beat Air Avellino 92-70 and improve to 7-3 in the league board. Smith paced the winners with 14 points, Marco Mordente and Nikos Zisis each added 12 while Spencer Nelson had 10 for Benetton. Smith and Mordente led Benetton to get a 32-21 lead after 10 minutes. Benetton boosted its margin to 51-32 at halftime and then again to 72-43 after 30 minutes to seal a massive home win. Snaidero Cucine Udine dropped to 3-7 due to a 76-63 road loss against Whirlpool Varese. Keith Carter led the winners with 17 points. Jerome Allen had 16 points for Udine, Larry O'Bannon added 14 and Damon Williams 11. Udine used a 0-8 run which Kristaps Valters capped with a triple to get a 29-30 edge at halftime. Free throws by Allen gave Udine its last lead at 40-44. Varese used a 15-1 run to get the lead for good, as even when more foul shots by Jakob Jaacks brought the guests within 63-61, another 13-0 run sealed the hosts' win down the stretch. Eldo Napoli dropped to 5-5 due to a 66-63 road loss against Upea Capo d'Orlando. Alvin Young had 16 points to lead Upea. Mason Rocca had 15 points for Napoli, Michel Morandais added 11 while Ansu Sesay and Jay Larranaga each scored 10 points for the guests. The game saw as many as 7 lead changed before Rocca scored for a 62-63 Napoli edge. Young hit 4 of 4 free throws in the final seconds for make Upea win the game.
