Italian League, Game 16: January 20-21, 2007
Michel Morandais - Eldo Napoli The Italian League regular season is about to reach its halfway mark and the eight teams which will fight for the TIM Cup title will be known by next weekend. Montepaschi Siena and VidiVici Bologna are mathematically qualified and tie atop the standings each with a 13-3 record. Montepaschi downed visiting Legea Scafati 78-50 at home on Sunday morning behind 22 points from Rimantas Kaukenas. Meanwhile, VidiVici edged Siviglia Wear Teramo 87-82. Eldo Napoli and Armani Jeans Milano tie for the third place at 10-6 while five other teams, including Lottomatica Roma and Benetton Treviso, are tied for fifth place at 9-7. Napoli beat Tisettanta Cantu 91-83 at home behind 30 points from Michel Morandais. Lottomatica Roma added a valuable win by topping Air Avellino 70-80 on the road with 28 points from David Hawkins. Snaidero Udine improved to 7-9 and hit as many as 18 three-pointers on a 103-90 home win against Climamio Bologna. Damon Williams led the winners with 22 points while James Thomas had 21 points and 14 rebounds for Climamio. Benetton beat TDShop.it Livorno 69-81 behind 22 points from Terrell Lyday. In other games, Premiata Montegranaro edged Angelico Biella 77-75, Armani Jeans beat Bibop Carire Reggio Emilia 73-66 while Upea Capo d'Orlando bested Whirlpool Varese 77-75 on a game-winning layup by Alvin Young.

Montepaschi Siena did not find much trouble to down visiting Legea Scafati 78-50 at home on Sunday morning. Rimantas Kaukenas led the winners with 22 points while Lonny Baxter and Shaun Stonerook each added 12 in an easy win for Montepaschi. A 14-2 final run in the first half gave Montepaschi a 42-27 lead at the break. The hosts extended their margin to 57-37 after three quarters and never looked back. Eldo Napoli stays third at 10-6 by beating Tisettanta Cantu 91-83 at home on Sunday. Michel Morandais led the way for Napoli with 30 points. Mason Rocca added 18, Tyrone Ellis 14 and Ansu Sesay 11 for the winners. Napoli trailed 74-79 with 3 minutes to go, but Ellis and Morandais combined for 15 points in crunch time to make the hosts add another win. Lottomatica Roma improved to 9-7 by topping Air Avellino 70-80 on the road on Sunday. David Hawkins led the winners with 28 points on 7-of-9 two-pointers and 3-of-3 triples. Mire Chatman and Dejan Bodiroga each had 13 for Roma, which trailed 60-57 after three quarters. Hawkins, Bodiroga and Jacopo Giachetti each had 4 points in a 3-12 run, enough for Lottomatica to keep a safe lead all the way.

Snaidero Cucine Udine confirmed its good moment by beating Climamio Bologna 103-90 at home on Sunday. Snaidero improved to 7-9 while Climamio dropped to 8-8. Damon Williams led the winners with 22 points. Jacob Jaacks added 19, Silvio Gigena had 18, Jerome Allen 15 and Larry O'Bannon 12. James Thomas led Climamio with a double-double of 21 points and 14 rebounds. David Bluthenthal added 18 points, Marco Belinelli had 17, Stefano Mancinelli 13 and Alain Digbeu 12. Snaidero played close to perfection in the opening quarter, hitting 8 three-pointers on its way to a 37-26 lead after 10 minutes. A layup by Williams gave Udine a 48-34 lead but Thomas, Bluthenthal and back-to-back triple by Digbeu allowed Climamio to get a 52-53 edge. The rain of three-pointers continued late in the third quarter, as Kristaps Valters, Christian Di Giuliomaria and Gigena stroke from downtown in a 14-0 run which gave Udine a 79-68 edge after three quarters. More triples by Di Giuliomaria, Williams, Gigena and Jaacks allowed the hosts to seal the win. Benetton Treviso improved to 9-7 by downing TDShop.it Livorno 69-81 on the road on Sunday night. Lyday led the way with 22 points, Preston Shumpert had 19 and 12 rebounds, Marco Mordente added 17, Marcus Goree 11 and Erazem Lorbek 10. Benetton trailed 35-32 late in the first half, but Lyday had 5 points in a 0-8 run which gave his team a 35-40 edge at the break. Lyday, Shumpert and Mordente allowed Benetton to extend its margin to 55-65 after three quarters and then again to 57-77 with 5 minutes to go, enough to seal the win.
