Italian League, Game 17: January 27-28, 2007 |
The Italian League regular season reached its halfway mark and four teams - Whirlpool Varese, Benetton Treviso, Premiata Montegranaro and Lottomatica Roma - joined already-qualified Montepaschi Siena, VidiVici Bologna, Eldo Napoli and Armani Jeans Milano as the eight squads which will fight for the Italian Cup title in the final eight held in Bologna next month. Montepaschi is back atop the standings by edging Climamio Bologna 81-85 on the road in come-from-behind fashion. Rimantas Kaukenas led the winners with 24 points while Romain Sato posted a double-double of 15 points and 13 rebounds for Montepaschi. Marco Belinelli had 21 points for Climamio. Meanwhile, Benetton beat Eldo Napoli 74-64 at home on Sunday behind 15 points from Erazem Lorbek. Snaidero Udine dropped to 7-10 due to a 96-82 road loss against Legea Scafati, while Lottomatica Roma dropped to 9-8 due to a 61-67 home loss against Milano.In other games, Whirlpool Varese beat VidiVici Bologna 75-69, Angelico Biella thrashed Air Avellino 95-68, Bipop Carire Reggio Emilia edged Upea Capo D'Orlando 79-75, Siviglia Wear Teramo bested Premiata Montegranaro 89-69 while Tisettanta Cantu topped TDShop.it Livorno 84-80.
Montepaschi Siena leads the standings with a league-best 14-3 record by edging Climamio Bologna 81-85 in Land Rover Arena on Saturday. Climamio dropped to 8-9 and will not fight to win the Italian Cup this season. Rimantas Kaukenas led the winners with 24 points on 10-of-10 free throws. Romain Sato posted a double-double of 15 points and 13 rebounds while Terrell McIntyre had 13 points for Montepaschi. Marco Belinelli had 21 points for Climamio, David Bluthenthal and Stefano Mancinelli each added 16 while Tyus Edney scored 13 points for the hosts. Bluthenthal and Belinelli fueled a 16-6 opening run for Climamio, while Edney shined late in the first half to give Climamio a 45-33 margin at the break. Climamio still led 76-69 midway through the fourth quarter, but a 1-8 run which Shaun Stonerook capped with a triple tied it at 77-77. McIntyre fired in the go-ahead triple, 80-83, while Sato sealed the win from the free throw line. Lottomatica Roma dropped to 9-8 due to a 61-67 home loss against Armani Jeans Milano. Sven Schultze fired in 5 triple on his way to 15 points for Milano. Dejan Bodiroga had 18 points for Roma while Alex Righetti and David Hawkins each added 11. Milano led 16-21 after 10 minutes but Hawkins and an outstanding Bodiroga allowed Roma to get a 35-30 edge at halftime. Luca Garri hit a triple to give Roma its last lead, 52-50, early in the fourth quarter. Milano used a 1-10 run to get a 53-60 edge and kept a slim lead all the way.
Benetton Treviso made it to the Italian Cup final eight by downing Eldo Napoli 74-64 at home on Sunday. Both teams share a 10-7 record in the standings. Erazem Lorbek led the winners with 15 points, Marcus Goree posted a double-double of 13 points and 12 rebounds while Terrell Lyday had 11 points for Benetton. Jeff Trepagnier had 14 points for Napoli, Tyrone Ellis added 13, Ansu Sesay 11 and Michel Morandais 10. Trepagnier had 5 points in a 1-11 run which allowed Napoli to keep a 40-41 edge at halftime. Benetton did not panic, however, as Lyday and Spencer Nelson fueled a 14-0 run which helped the hosts to get a 60-52 lead after three quarters. Napoli went scoreless in the opening 4 minutes of the final period, while a dunk by Goree gave Benetton a 68-52 margin, enough to seal a well-deserved win. Snaidero Udine dropped to 7-10 due to a 96-82 road loss against Legea Scafati. Rick Apodaca led the winners with 28 points. Jerome Allen also had 28 for Udine, Larry O'Bannon added 15 and Silvio Gigena 11. Udine trailed 79-75 with 5 minutes to go, but Szymon Szewczyk had 8 unanswered points for Scafati, enough to seal the win for the hosts.
