Adriatic League, Game 23: March 3-4, 2007 |
Three teams - FMP, Partizan and Cibona - mathematically advanced to the Adriatic League playoffs and keep fighting for the top spot in the standings, each with a 18-5 record. Partizan stayed ahead the standings by edging to edge Buducnost 81-79 in overtime at home on Saturday. Kosta Perovic led the winners with 18 points and 8 rebounds. Vonteego Cummings added 14 point while Uros Tripkovic hit 4 key free throws at the end of regulation. Cibona improved to 18-5 by simply overwhelming archrivals Split 106-66 in Zagreb on Saturday. Chris Warren led 7 Cibona players in double digits with 24 points. Meanwhile, FMP needed overtime to edge Hemofarm 92-96 in Vrsac also on Saturday. Dragan Labovic paced the winners with 20 points and 8 rebounds. Branko Cvetkovic added 18 points while Aleksej Nesovic had 22 for Hemofarm. Predrag Suput hit 4 free throws to force overtime, 85-85, but FMP managed to leave the court with a key win. Union Olimpija improved to 11-12 by downing Crvena Zvezda 88-82 in Ljubljana on Saturday behind 27 points from Teemu Rannikko. Milan Gurovic had 28 points for Zvezda. In other games on Saturday, Siroki Prima Pivo beat Geoplin Slovan 95-85. On Sunday, Helios Domzale bested Bosna Asa BHT 91-81 while Zadar downed Zagreb 98-80.
Partizan had to battle harder than expected to edge Buducnost 81-79 in overtime at home on Saturday. Kosta Perovic led the winners with 18 points and 8 rebounds. Vonteego Cummings added 14 points, Uros Tripkovic had 13, Milenko Tepic 11 and Predrag Drobnjak 10. Zarko Rakocevic had 20 for Buducnost, that led 32-34 at halftime and improved its margin to 63-67 with 2 minutes to go. Cummings hit a critical triple and soon added free throws to tie it at 69-69. Tripkovic hit 4 of 4 free throws but Nenad Mijatovic made just 4 of 6, missing a key one that allowed Partizan to stay alive, 73-73, at the end of regulation. Free throws by Vladimir Micov gave the guests their last lead, 77-78. Perovic stepped up with a three-point play, Miljan Pavkovic and Tepic made a foul shot apiece while Vladimir Dasic missed a shot that would have taken the game to double overtime. Union Olimpija improved to 11-12 by downing Crvena Zvezda 88-82 in Ljubljana on Saturday. Teemu Rannikko led the way for Olimpija with 27 points, Manu Markoishvili added 25 and Domen Lorbek 19. Milan Gurovic had 28 points for Zvezda, Pero Antic 13 and Mirko Kovac 10. Antic followed a dunk with free throws to give Zvezda a 66-67 edge midway through the final period. A 9-0 run that Markoishvili capped with a layup put Olimpija ahead for good and the hosts never looked back. MIha Zupan was allowed to play for Olimpija for the first time since October.
Cibona made it to the playoffs and joined the three-way tie atop the standings by simply overwhelming archrivals Split 106-66 in Zagreb on Saturday. Chris Warren led 7 Cibona players in double digits with 24 points. Brent Wright added 16, Barisa Krasic had 15, Andrew Wisniewski and Marin Rozic each tallied 14, Marton Bader 12 and Marijan Mance 11 in an easy home win for Cibona, that led 62-25 at halftime and did not find much trouble to add an easy win. FMP also improved to 18-5 by edging Hemofarm 92-96 in overtime on the road on Saturday. Dragan Labovic paced the winners with 20 points and 8 rebounds. Branko Cvetkovic added 18 points, Marko Djerasimovic had 13, Aleksandar Rasic 12 and Djordje Micic 10. Aleksej Nesovic had 22 points for Hemofarm, that dropped to 16-7 in the standings. Milenko Topic added 20, Predrag Suput 11 while Vanja Plisnic and Nebojsa Joksimovic each scored 10 points for the hosts. Nesovic had 8 points in a 12-2 opening run that allowed Hemofarm to keep a 23-19 lead after 10 minutes. Plisnic, Suput and a final triple by Miljan Rakic boosted the hosts' lead to 48-41 at halftime. Cvetkovic and Labovic fueled the FMP comeback, as the guests led 63-68 after 30 minutes and 81-85 with seconds to go. Suput hit 4 free throws to force overtime, 85-85. FMP only scored free throws in the extra period, but it was enough to escape from Vrsac with a valuable win.
