Baltic League, Phase 2, Games 9-10: February 27-March 3, 2007
Mindaugas Lukauskis - Lietuvos Rytas Lietuvos Rytas climbed to first place in the Baltic League, Division I table by beating rival Zalgiris Kaunas 72-87 on the road Saturday, while Ventspils by recorded back-to-back wins to climb into third place with 4-4 record. The Baltic League battle of Lithuanian titans had an unsatisfactory ending. The game was suspended with less than 2 minutes remaining because Zalgiris fans began throwing foreign objects onto the court. Both teams' players went to the lockers and within a few minutes the officials awarded L. Rytas a technical win with a 72-87 score. L. Rytas led at the end of the first quarter 11-16, but Zalgiris was back on track at halftime, 34-37. After the break, the guests extended their cushion to 43-59 and after Ivan Koljevic posted four free throws, the game was suspended. Mindaugas Lukauskis scored 21 points, Matt Nielsen tallied 14 points with 8 rebounds and Ivan Koljevic netted 13 for L. Rytas, while Zalgiris was led by Marko Popovic with 19 and Marcelinho Machado with 15.

Earlier in the week, Zalgiris needed overtime to edge ASK Riga on the road 88-91. The hosts held a slim cushion for much of the game, but Zalgiris tied it at 73-73 during a late 2-10-2 run and took a 76-78 advantage. Curtis Millage tied the score with 5 seconds left in the regulation, forcing the game to overtime. Marko Popovic sealed the game from the foul line, allowing Zalgiris the tough win. Paulius Janukunas led the way by scoring 21 points with 11 rebounds, Tanoka Beard tallied 20 with 6. Jonas Maciulis finished with 19 points and DeJuan Collins dished 10 assists. Millage led Riga with 24. Ventspils scored an 88-82 home win over Siauliai behind 24 points and 5 assists by Eddie Shannon. The perennial Latvian champions held a 49-37 margin at halftime, which they raised to 73-56 after 30 minutes. Uvis Helamnis added 16 points, Kaspars Cipruss 12 with 7 boards, while Justin Love chipped in 11. Ventspils recorded its second win of the week on Saturday by topping Barons/LMT 55-63 on the road as Love scored 13 points, Shannon had 12 points and 6 rebounds and Dusan Jelic posted 9 points and 10 rebounds.
