European domestic leagues review: June 18 -June 26, 2007

The last of the domestic leagues in Europe came to a close this week and the last of the remaining tickets to the 2007-08 Euroleague were snatched up accordingly. In the Spanish League, ULEB Cup champ Real Madrid won its second Spanish League crown in three years and 30th overall by topping rival Winterthur F.C. Barcelona 71-82 on Sunday to take their best-of-five finals series 3-1. Felipe Reyes hit 10 of 14 two-point shots in Game 4 and finished with 21 points on the way to being chosen the finals MVP. Elsewhere in the Serbian League, Partizan Belgrade wrapped up its sixth straight domestic championship by beating Crvena Zvezda 67-84 in Game 4 of their best-of-five finals series. The victory marked Partizan's 14th domestic championship dating back to the days of the old Yugoslavian League. Veteran big man Predrag Drobnjak was the hero after sealing the victory with a crucial three-pointer with 4 minutes to go. He finished as Partizan's top scorer with 21 points and 13 rebounds. Finally, Brose Baskets Bamberg wrapped up its second German League title in three seasons by taking down the upstart Artland Dragons 63-64 victory in Game 4 of their best-of-five finals series. European domestic leagues review: June 11 -June 17, 2007

Three more domestic leagues came to an end this week and three more champions were crowned throughout the weekend. In the Croatian League, Cibona won its second consecutive Croatian League title and its 14th since the competition was created in the 1991-92 season by overwhelming Zadar 100-62 in Game 5 on Sunday to win the best-of-five finals 3-2. Davor Kus led the winners with 18 points. Cibona overcame a do-or-die situation with a 89-90 road win in Game 4 and finished the job with a resounding home win right when it mattered. Elsewhere in the Italian League, won its second Italian League title by sweeping the best-of-five finals against VidiVici Bologna. Montepaschi capped an incredible domestic season by topping VidiVici 90-82 in Siena in game 3 on Sunday. Terrell McIntyre paced the winners with 22 points and Joseph Forte added 21. Last but not least, Telindus Oostende took the high road to its second consecutive Belgian League title with a resounding 100-77 home win against visiting Euphony Bree in the fifth and last game of their finals series on Sunday. Veselin Petrovic led the winners with 22 points while Sam Van Rossom, who had missed Game 4 of the series with an injury, came back to collect 17 points and 5 assists. European domestic leagues review: June 4 -June 10, 2007

Just a few leagues are left playing in Europe, but a couple of champions were crowned this week. In the Czech League, CEZ Basketball Nymburk conquered its foruth consecutive title by downing BK Prostejov 98-74 in three-game sweep thanks in part to 24 points by Radoslav Rancik in the last victory. The Slovenian League produced a first-time champion, Helios Domzale, which won the final series 3-2 thanks to a blowout 82-65 victory in Game 5 over injury-plagued Union Olimpija in which Smiljan Pavic led the winners with 17 points. Elsewhere, the Greek League finals are tied up 1-1 after Olympiacos beat archrivals and Euroleague champ Panathinaikos 76-72 on Sunday behind 21 points from Arvydas Macijauskas. The Belgian League finals are headed for a decisive fifth-game after Euphony Bree saved itself by edging Telindus Oostende 73-72 at home in Game 4 as Jim Cantamessa and Kelvin Tolbert led the winners with 14 points each. Both semifinals series in the Spanish League are headed to Game 5, do-or-die showdowns tied 2-2, one between Real Madrid and DKV Joventut, the other between Winterthur FCB and Tau Ceramica. Trophies were lifted high from one end of Europe to the other last week, crowning new and repeat champions alike. There was CSKA Moscow winning its fifth consecutive Russia League title in a three-game sweep of Unics Kazan that ended with a 71-78 road win in which Trajan Langdon led the winners with 19 points. In the Turkish League, it was all Fenerbahce Ulker in a 4-0 finals sweep of Efes Pilsen, including a 76-98 Game 4 victori in which Mirsad Turkcan had a double-double of 21 points, 12 rebounds. Prokom Trefl aced its fourth straight Polish League, title in fine fashionby shutting down Turow 68-56 at home in Sopot to win their best-of-seven final series by 4-1. Donatas Slanina was named MVP of the series for Prokom. A one-game final that will go down among the most amazing ever in the Israeli League, saw Maccabi Tel Aviv take its 37th title in 38 years as Jamie Arnold's put-back with 2.2 seconds left gave the champs their first and only lead of the game against Hapoel Jerusalem. It was also a one-game final in the French League, which saw Roanne win its first domestic crown in almost 50 years with a 74-81 victory over Sluc Basket Nancy in which Marc Salyers scored 27 points. Finally, in the Swiss League, Fribourg became Switzerland's first team to lift three trophies in one season as it defeated Lugano 3-1 in the finals. A pair of thrilling series crowned another pair of national champions in Europe during the week. Fans could not have asked for any more drama in the consecutive Portuguese League, where the final series reached into the last minute of Game 7. Ben Reed's three-pointer with 42 seconds sent Ovarense to a 75-68 home win over FC Porto. Reed finished with 29 points after hitting 7 of 9 triples. It was Ovarense's fourth national title. Earlier in the week, there was a similar finish in the consecutive Lithuanian League, where Zalgiris Kaunas took back the crown by downing archrival Lietuvos Rytas 77-81 in Game 6 of the finals. Marcelinho Machado was the last-minute hero for Zalgiris, hitting a go-ahead three-pointer with 34 seconds left, then making free throws to ensure the title. The parade of national champions continued last week with EiffelTowers Den Bosch conquering its second consecutive Dutch League title by beating Matrixx Magixx Nijmegen 78-88 to sweep their final series 4-0. Sam Jones led the way way for the champs by scoring 17 points. The title means that Den Bosch will return to the ULEB Cup next season, the same as Lukoil Academic, which took its fifth straight Bulgarian League crown by 3-0 also, edging CSKA Sofia 97-99 in double overtime in Game 3 as Lamont Jones poured in 26 points. Meanwhile, there was a change of the guard in the Latvian League , where ASK Riga is the new champ, ending the eight-year reign of BK Ventspils with 4-2 finals victory that ended with 91-77 home decision in Game 6. ASK also advances to the next ULEB Cup, marking the return of a European classic, as the club won the first three continental titles ever given, in 1958, 1959 and 1960. While other domestic leagues are thick in the playoffs, four of the biggest country competitions in Europe cruised to the end of their regular seasons last week, setting up their own post-season eliminatory rounds. In the French League , four of the top seven teams squared off against each other, with regular season champ Nancy blasting Cholet 90-61 behind 18 points from Maxime Zianveni while second-place Roanne held off Strasbourg 86-80. Tau Ceramica held onto first place in the Spanish League by blowing out Bilbao, 95-63, as Luis Scola poured in 21 points. That result combined with DKV Joventut defeateing Real Madrid 81-70 as Rudy Fernandez paced the winners with 18 points and 8 assists. The German League regular season came to an end with Alba Berlin first at 28-6 after edging Braunschweig 74-81 as Julius Jenkins had 17 points. And in the Italian League, it was hats off to Montepaschi Siena, which ended the regular season first at 30-4 after downing Climamio Bologna 106-87 behind 24 points from Rimantas Kaukenas. In a busy weekend around European domestic leagues, RheinEnergie lifted its third German Cup in four years by edging the Artland Dragons 60-58 in the title game in Hamburg. Demond Mallet led the winners with 21 points while Martin Gortat added 10 for RheinEnergie, that now will try to defend the German League title and return to the Euroleague next season. Elsewhere, in its last game before the Final Four, Panathinaikos finished the Greek League regular season in first place and in style by thrashing Olympia Larissas 87-58 behind 14 points from Mike Batiste. Aris TT Bank finished second at 21-5 by downing Apollon Âxaia 67-86 while Olympiacos was third also at 21-5 by downing PAOK 60-71 behind 14 points from Arvydas Macijauskas. The best-of-three quarterfinals will be Panathinaikos vs. Maroussi, Aris vs. Olympia Larissa, Olympiacos vs. PAOK and Panionios vs. Panellinios. The Turkish League regular season also finished and Fenerbahce Ulker ended first at 28-2 by thrashing Turk Telekom 65-81 in Ankara behind 27 points from Will Solomon. Efes Pilsen was second at 27-3 with a 86-74 home win against Tofas. Shortly after falling short in the ULEB Cup Final, Lietuvos Rytas successfully defended its Baltic League crown by downing rival Zalgiris 77-81 in the title game in Riga, Latvia. Kareem Rush scored 22 points as his teamed pulled away early. Zalgiris rallied late, but L. Rytas held steady and made the crucial free throws to retain the title. The other big title of the week saw Partizan Belgrade take the Adriatic Leaguecrown by sweeping BC FMP 2-0 in the best-of-three finals series. A 94-82 home win in which Uros Tripkovic scored 19 points sealed the series after Partizan had won Game 1 earlier, by 82-84 on the road. Also earlier in the week, Montepaschi Siena clinched first place in the Italian League regular season, and with it passage to the Euroleague next season, by thrashing Snaidero Udine 98-78 as Rimantas Kaukenas scored 22 points. A busy weekend across the continent featured five of six Euroleague and ULEB Cup teams in the Spanish League winning their games, including co-leaders Real Madrid, the new ULEB Cup champion, and Tau Ceramica, a Final Four qualifier. Madrid used a late 14-3 run to beat Pamesa Valencia 78-66 as Louis Bullock popped 23 points. Tau topped Alicante 66-73 as Tiago Splitter posted 17 points and 11 rebounds. Winterthur FCB stayed third by edging Fuenlabrada 66-75 as Juan Carlos Navarro scored 20. On a busy weekend in the Italian League , all six ULEB teams - four from this year's Euroleague and two from the ULEB Cup - came up with victories to improve their positions with seven games left in the regular season. Montepaschi Siena stayed atop the standings by rallying to beat Angelico Biella 100-92 in Siena. Joseph Forte led the winners with 25 points. Lottomatica Roma is second still after thrashing Scafati 86-69 behind 20 points from David Hawkins. Benetton Treviso got a 78-84 road win at Avellino as Marcus Goree scored 22. Mike Penberthy's game-winning triple helped Udine edge Varese 73-71 Climamio Bologna topped Cantu 81-65 behind 17 points from Stefano Mancinelli, while Napoli defeated Capo d'Orlando 79-77. Meanwhile, the Russian League got a lot tighter after Unics Kazan caught up on its schedule by winning three roads games for a 20-3 record that now ties CSKA while Khimky moved right behind them at 19-4. Le Mans rally to beat first-place Roanne 75-66 at home a Eric Campbell led the winners with 23 points. Fourth-place Strasbourg overwhelmed third-place Chalon 94-63 as Sacha Giffa poured in 19 points. Nancy took advantage of those other results to tie Roanne for the league lead by thrashing last-place Reims 63-93 on the road as Tariq Kirksay scored 25. And Pau-Orthez blitzed Orleans 61-87 away behind Michael Wright's 19 points to forge a fifth-place tie with the losers and Le Mans. Another three-way tie for first place was broken in the Adriatic League when BC FMP downed Cibona by 81-74 as Zoran Erceg led the winners with 18 points. FMP now ties only with Partizan for the league lead. There was a battle between ULEB Cup and Euroleague teams the top of the German League over the weekend, and when the dust settled, Alba Berlin was still in first place, having won 70-81 on the road at RheinEnergie Cologne thanks to 20 points from newcomer Kirk Penney and 19 from Chris Owens. Alba remains tied for first place with Ludwigsburg. Third-place RheinEnergie got 17 points from Immanuel McElroy. . Former ULEB Cup champion Lietuvos Rytas, reading for a quarterfinal effort on Tuesday, warmed up well over the weekend in the Baltic League, defeating Zalgiris 72-87 as Mindaugas Lukauskis scored 21 points in a game suspended before time expired because of fan interference. Tau Ceramica took the big showdown in the Spanish League by thrashing Unicaja 85-56 in Vitoria on Saturday, in a rematch of last year's title series. Tiago Splitter and Zoran Planinic paced the winners each with 15 points, as Tau opened the game with a 27-10 run and never looked back. It has been an intense week in all European domestic competitions, with Euroleague and ULEB Cup teams showing their power all around the continent. Khimki improved to 15-4 in the Russian League standings by downing mighty Unics Kazan 113-80 at home on Friday behind 22 points from Ruben Wolkowyski and 21 from Maciej Lampe. The Unics loss allowed CSKA Moscow to get back atop the standings with a league-best 15-2 record. CSKA did not have troubles to thrash Standart 106-66 in Moscow on Saturday. Thomas Van den Spiegel led seven CSKA players in double digits with 17 points. Elsewhere in the Adriatic League, Partizan, Cibona and FMP join a three-way tie atop the standings with just 4 games to go in the regular season. Partizan thrashed Geoplin Slovan 69-97 behind 17 points each from Boris Bakic and Novica Velickovic, FMP bested Zadar 105-84 in Zeleznik with 24 points from Zoran Erceg while Crvena Zvezda topped Cibona 93-89 in Belgrade. There was a whole lot of shakin' going on at the top of several European domestic competitions over the weekend. In the Turkish League, that meant that for the first time since October, Efes Pilsen took a share of first place by downing long-time leader Turk Telekom 79-72 as Marcus Haislip exploded for 29 points and 8 rebounds. The victory forged a three-way tie between those two teams and Fenerbahce Ulker. Meanwhile, the classic derby of Greek League saw Olympiacos defeat Panathinaikos 84-89 behind 18 points from Andrija Zizic. It marked the first victory by the Reds at OAKA Olympic Indoor Hall in seven years. In the French League, Strasbourg provided an eye-popping result by downing Nancy 56-85 on the road with a 0-21 finishing run! Nancy fell out of first place due to the loss and will not want to see Strasbourg, which also knocked it out of the ULEB Cup elimination rounds, anytimes soon. Chuck Eidson again led Strasbourg with 18 points while Aerick Sanders added 17 and 12 rebounds. Euroleague and ULEB Cup teams highlighted the lists of national cup winners across the continent this week. Indeed, many of the tournament title games pitted a Euroleague and ULEB Cup powers against each other. Such was the case with a classic derby in the Spanish King's Cup final, with Winterthur FC Barcelona dominating Real Madrid 53-69 as Jordi Trias was named MVP. Earlier in the week, it was a similar scenario as Zalgiris won the Lithuanian Federation Cup by defeating archrival Lietuvos Rytas by 84-65 as Tanoka Beard posted 21 points and 11 rebounds. In two other finals, however, the ULEB Cup teams prevailed. In the Serbian Korac Cup, BC FMP downed Partizan 73-61 as Zoran Erceg and Aleksandar Rasic scored 15 points each, while in the Polish Cup, it was Anwil Wloclawek outdueling Prokom Trefl Sopot 72-66 as Otis Hill poured in 18 points. The dominance of Euroleague and ULEB Cup teams in the Adriatic League was proven during another weekend of victories in all games they faced - except one in which two of them played. In that showdown, Hemofarm defeated visiting Union Olimpija 78-76 on game-winning free throws by Predrag Suput despite Teemu Rannikko scoring 37 for the losers. First-place Cibona defeated Bosna 96-91, Crvena Zvezda downed Siroki 76-85 on the road despite missing ULEB Cup scoring champ Milan Gurovic, Partizan walloped Split 111-81 and BC FMP won 81-85 at fifth-placed Buducnost. In the Russian League, a pair of teams readied for ULEB Cup eighthfinals with victoris. Defending Euroleague champion CSKA Moscow regained the top spot in the Russian League standings over the weekend by downing ULEB Cup contender Unics Kazan 94-75 at home in one of the most anticipated games of the season. Carl English of Zadar earned MVP honors and led the winners with 29 points, with Davor Kus and Chris Warren of Cibona and Manu Markoishvili and Marko Milic of Union Olimpija each reaching double figures for the West, while Petar Popovic and Nebojsa Joksimovic of Hemofarm and ULEB Cup-leadeing scorer Milan Gurovic of Crvena Zvezda were main scorers for the East team.
