German League Semifinals, Game 4: June 3, 2008
Alba Berlin is in pole position to win its first German League crown in five years after downing EWE Baskets Oldenburg 68-72 on the road Tuesday to clinch a spot in the finals. Berlin won the best-of-five semifinals series 3-1 and will now await the identity of its opponent in the finals after Telekom Baskets Bonn beat Deutsche Bank Skyliners 79-60 behind 19 points from Winsome Frazier to knot that series at 2-2. In Oldenburg, Julius Jenkins scored 17 points – including 3 free throws in the last 16.2 seconds – to help Berlin hold off Oldenburg’s late charge. Dragan Dojcin added 15 points – 8 of which came down the stretch – Aleksandar Nadjfeji had 13 and Immanuel McElroy 12. Rickey Paulding led Oldenburg with 16 and Jasmin Perkovic scored 13 in defeat. Bonn dominated early, scoring at least 25 points in each of the first two periods en route to a 51-33 halftime lead, which Frankfurt never recovered from. The hosts shot much better than the Skyliners – including 47.1% from downtown – to earn the win and force Game 5. John Bowler added 16 points and Patrick Flomo had 11 for the winners. Derrick Allen and Jimmy McKinney scored 11 each for Frankfurt, which will host Game 5 on Thursday.
Alba Berlin is in pole position to win its first German League crown in five years after downing EWE Baskets Oldenburg 68-72 on the road Tuesday to clinch a spot in the finals. Julius Jenkins scored 17 points – including 3 free throws in the last 16.2 seconds – to help Berlin hold off Oldenburg’s late charge. Aleksandar Nadjfeji scored 6 during a 0-11 run to open the second period as Berlin raced ahead, settling for a 30-37 halftime lead. The lead was 39-53 late in the third quarter before Oldenburg stormed back as Jasmin Perkovic hit a pair of triples during a 13-0 charge to bring the hosts within 1. Another Perkovic triple put the home team ahead 58-56. A Jason Gardner free throw capped a 22-3 run and made it 61-56 with three minutes remaining. Berlin then turned the tables as Dragan Dojcin hit a triple and added 2 free throws during a run of 8 straight Alba points. Ricky Paulding tied the game at 66-66 with 47 seconds left, but another Dojcin hit a three with 24 seconds left to give Berlin the lead for good and Jenkins’s free throws sealed the win and the series.
