The Newcastle Eagles won the British Basketball League title in emphatic fashion on Monday by coming back from a 20-point second-half deficit to defeat the defending champion Guildford Heat on the road in overtime 101-108. The Eagles improved to 27-4 and with two games to play have a five-win lead over the second place Kularoos Plymouth Raiders. The Heat are one win behind the Raiders with a game at hand. Guildford led 88-68 late in the third quarter, but the Eagles never quit, turned up the defensive pressure and used a 3-15 charge to finish regulation and force overtime when player-coach Fab Flournoy made a pair of free throws with 14 seconds remaining to tie the game at 96-96. In the extra time, Andrew Bridge's shooting took care of business and lifted Newcastle to its first win of the season over Guildford. Steve Leven led the Eagles with 30 points, Lynard Stewart had 20 points and 12 rebounds and Darius Defoe came off the bench for 18 points. Danny Gilbert finished with 27 points for the Heat, Mike Martin added 24 points and EJ Harrison 21.
