Italian League Finals, Game 1: June 3, 2008
Defending champion Montepaschi Siena won its 13th straight Italian League playoff game Tuesday by topping Lottomatica Roma 85-73 in the opener of the best-of-seven finals. Terrell McIntyre scored 22 points and dished 8 assists to lead Montepaschi, which finished the game on a 8-0 run after Roma closed to within 4 with less than a minute remaining. David Hawkins scored 6 straight to put Roma ahead 17-22 late in the first period, but Ksistof Lavrinovic and Romain Sato combined for the next 7 points as Montepaschi regained the lead. The lead would switch hands four more times before halftime, when Montepaschi led 43-39. McIntyre hit a pair of triples as Montepaschi went up 57-47 only to see Roma rally to within 4 early in the fourth quarter. But the visitors couldn't get any closer than that and Montepaschi held on for the win. Lavrinovic added 13 for the winners, Sato scored 11 and Shaun Stonerook and Ben Eze had 10 each. Erazem Lorbek paced Roma with 21 points and Hawkins and Ibrahim Jaaber had 13 each. Game 2 of the series is also set for Siena on Thursday.
