Italian League Finals, Game 2: June 5, 2008
Defending champion Montepaschi Siena improved to 2-0 in the Italian League Finals Thursday by trumping Lottomatica Roma 85-82 in a game that wasn't as close as the final score would indicate. Montepaschi never trailed and led by as many as 16 in the third quarter. The advantage was still 10 after a pair of Ksistof Lavrinovic free throws with two minutes remaining. Back-to-back three-pointers by Roberto Gabini and Erazem Lorbek gave the visitors some hope, but Terrell McIntrye, Romain Sato and Rimas Kaukenas all hit their free throws to keep Montepaschi in control despite threes from Gabini and David Hawkins that cut the deficit to 3 before the final buzzer. The win was Montepaschi's 14th in a row in the Italian League playoffs dating back to last season's semifinals when it lost to Roma. Kaukenas, who missed much of the season through injury and returned in the semifinals, led the way with 19 points in 23 minutes. McIntyre finished with 17 and Sato 14. Lorbek paced Roma with 22 points, Hawkins and Gabini added 17 each and Roko Ukic 11. Game 3 of the best-of-seven series is set for Sunday in Rome.
