Turkish League, Playoffs, Quarterfinals Game 1: May 4-5, 2008

Pinar Karsiyaka shocked Efes Pilsen Istanbul in the major upset of the opening round of the Turkish League playoffs. Quinton Hosley led six Karsiyaka scorers in double figures with 16 points and 9 rebounds as the No. 7 seeds topped the second seeds 73-79. Game 1 of the quarterfinals featured only three matchups, since regular-season champion Besiktas ColaTurka beat Banvit 2-0 this season and accordingly starts the playoffs with a 1-0 advantage. Meanwhile defending champion Fenerbahce Ulker struggled before beating Antalya Buyuksehir Belediyesi 78-73 as Damir Mrsic led Fener with 19 points. Turk Telekom took a 1-0 lead over Galatasaray Café Crown with a 78-71 victory behind Tutku Acik, who scored 17 and dished 8 assists.
Pinar Karsiyaka shocked Efes Pilsen Istanbul in the first game of their quarterfinal series, stealing away the home-court advantage. Andre Hutson and Serkan Erdogan got off to a fast start for Efes Pilsen and the home team led 14-6 after five minutes. But Karsiyaka responded well in the remaining time in the first period as Quinton Hosley and Baris Ermis scored to bring the visitors back to 23-20. Karsiyaka continued to play well and through points inside from Asim Pars and Hosley went ahead by halftime 35-37. Gino Carlisle joined Hosley along with Pars and pushed the Karsiyaka lead to 7. Dewarick Spencer tried to keep Efes in the game, but Emre Bayav and Sean Marshall helped Pinar Karsiyaka get to the last period ahead 52-55. Karsiyaka used the advantage of a demoralized opponent in the last period and three-pointers by Hosley and Valentin Pastal and extended the lead to 58-71 with four minutes left to play. Efes responded with a 9-0 charge and got within 71-75 on Hutson and Kerem Gonlum points, but Karsiyaka scored more than the home side in the last minute and won the game 73-79. Hosley led six Karsiyaka scorers in double figures with 16 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists, Carlisle had 13 points, Pars scored 12, Bayav and Marshall added 11 each and Pastal created 10 for Karsiyaka. Hutson lead Efes with 21 points and Gonlum and Scoonie Penn had 12 each for Efes Pilsen.
Fenerbahce Ulker struggled, but beat Antalya Buyuksehir Belediyesi 78-73 in Istanbul for a 1-0 lead in the quarterfinal series. Fener built a quick, early lead on triples from Damir Mrsic, Oguz Savas and Omer Onan plus a layup plus a free throw from Tarence Kinsey to go up by 10 and finish the opening period up 24-16. Dominique Marsh and Mustafa Kemal Bitim fired up the visitors by scoring in the beginning of the second quarter and a Marsh layup gave the lead to the visitors for the first time, 28-29. Mirsad Turkcan and Emir Preldzic tried to keep Fener ahead and succeeded at the end of the first half, 37-35. Can Akin and Ersin Gorkem triples at the beginning of the second half put Antalya ahead 39-43, but James White and Mrsic cut the speed of the visitors. Mrsic layup gave the hosts a promising 54-45 lead, but Gorkem and Marsh points in the remaining minutes cut the gap again before the last period 54-53. Bitim and Lucas threes were answered by White and Kinsey in the first few minutes of the last period before Mrsic’s crucial points in the last minute along with White helped Fener to win the game. Mrsic paced Fener with 19 points, White had 15 and Kinsey scored 12 for Fener. Marsh scored 20, Bitim had 11 and Gorkem added 10 for Antalya.
Turk Telekom took a 1-0 lead over Galatasaray Café Crown with a 78-71 victory. The hosts led by 8 after 10 minutes, went up 40-29 by halftime and led by 15 after three periods before holding off Galatasaray's late charge. Tutku Acik scored 17 and dished 8 assists to pace the winning team, Erwin Dudley added 14 and Chris Williams and Haluk Yildrim scored 11 each for the hosts. Charles Gaines posted 21 points and 11 rebounds for Galatasaray, Chris Owens had 15 points and 8 rebounds and Huseyin Besok added 10.
