Austrian League playoffs, semifinals, Game 3: May 17, 2009
Deteri Mayes - Allianz Swans Gmunden (Photo: panthers.at)Allianz Swans Gmunden survived a triple-overtime thriller to beat Arkadia Traiskirchen Lions 107-110 and become the first to advance to the Austrian League finals. Meanwhile WBC Kraftwerk Wels moved within one win of eliminating defending champ BSC Raiffeisen Furstenfeld by winning Game 3 94-81 to take a 2-1 series lead. Deteri Mayes scored 28 points and Shelton Colwell added 20 to pace the Swans to an epic win. Traiskirchen led by 4 with a minute to play in regulation before an Anthony Fisher basket and a Peter Hutter tip-in knotted the game with 23 seconds left in regulation. Benni Danek’s potentially game-winning layup bounced out setting up the first extra period. Traiskirchen’s Deven Mitchell forced the second overtime by tying the game at 75-75 after 45 minutes. With players dropping like flies due to fouls – six players fouled out in the end – reserves played bigger roles. Gmunden’s Florian Schoninger tied the game at 93-93 with a pair of free throws with 28 seconds to play in the period and the Lions were unable to convert at the other end, setting up a third overtime. Alas Gmunden had more energy and Mayes’s free throw with 2 seconds left helped ice the win. Mitchell scored 37 and Frederico Vay had 25 in defeat. Wels used a 26-13 second quarter to take a 51-33 halftime lead en route to its win over Furstenfeld. Tilo Klette paced Wels with 27 points and Davor Lamesic added 16. Bryan Lucas led Furstenfeld with 18.
