Austrian League playoffs, Finals, Game 1: May 28, 2009

The finals of the Austrian League opened on Thursday with a thriller that left host Allianz Swans Gmunden standing with a hard-fought 86-82 win over visiting Kraftwerk Wels. The best-of-five series stays in Gmunden for Game 2 on Monday. Gmunden led by double-digits early in the game but the visitors used a 6-14 first-quarter run to get back in the game quickly and pull within 49-46 at halftime. The pattern repeated itself as Gmunden went ahead by as many as 8 points after halftime, 61-53, only to find Wels drawing within a point on several occasions, the last time at 75-74 with 4 minutes to play. Deteri Mayes, Reggie Huffman and Anthony Fisher scored the next three baskets, however, sending Gmunden on its way to a 1-0 start in the series. Mayes led the winners with 20 points, while Fisher had 17 and Huffman 13.
