Austrian League playoffs, Finals, Game 3: June 4, 2009

The Austrian League finals saw WBC Kraftwerk Wels move within a victory of the title by defeating Allianz Swans Gmunden 89-86 in a well-fought Game 3 to go up 2-1 in the best-of-five series. Wels can take its first-ever Austrian crown with a home victory in Game 4 on Sunday. Davor Lamesic led the winners with 22 points. Gmunden sent a message by storming to a 17-24 lead after one quarter that the series was far from over. Gmunden built its game on the inside, going to Shelton Colwell, who was just one rebound short of a double-double at halftime. Gmunden also did a good job in the first half of denying Wels star Brandon Thomas, the author of 28 points in the previous game, but only 3 shots attempted in the first half on his team's home floor. Still, Wels was able to find other scorers in the second quarter and take a 38-37 lead at the break. When Lamesic and Armin Woschank opened the second half strong, the hosts were quicly up 47-40, their biggest lead yet. Wels was getting a more dispersed offensive production, with Klette, Fields and Lamesic in double figures already. Gmunden started getting its own help from Anthony Fisher, however, to not only stay close, but tie it up, 54-54, after 30 minutes. In a tight final quarter, the visitors got on the back of their leader, Deteri Mayes, who got them within basket at the finish before fouling out and seeing Tilo Klette hit the insurance free throw for the Wels victory. In addition to Lamesic, Klette scored 18 points, Bruce Fields 17 and Thomas 10 for the winners. Gmunden got 29 points from Mayes plus 27 and 14 rebounds from Colwell.
