Spirou Basket Charleroi and Dexia Mons-Hainaut took a 1-0 lead in their respective best-of-three Belgian League semifinal series and are just win away from making it to the finals. Brandon Gay had 11 points for Antwerp. A 10-0 opening run in the third quarter allowed the hosts to break the game, 49-33, as Antwerp only rallied once the outcome was clear. Meanwhile, Mons simply overwhelmed Generali Okapi Aalstar 88-53 at home in Game 1 on Tuesday. Kelvin Tolbert paced the winners with 14 points. Caleb Green added 13, Elton Nesbitt had 12 while Marcellus Sommerville got 11 for Mons, that downed 11-for-20 three-pointers in the first half to break the game open, 50-21. Trevor Huffman and Pablo Gonzales each had 13 points for Okapi in defeat.
In Mons, Nesbitt, Jim Potter and Tolbert struck from downtown in a 18-0 opening run, as Okapi needed more than 5 minutes to score. Nate Reinking joined the three-point shootout while another triple by Potter boosted the hosts' lead to 26-7 after 10 minutes. Far from being done, Mons stayed unstoppable. Nothing changed in the second half, as Mons sealed the outcome long before the final buzzer. In Charleroi Gay and Kevin Lynch shined early to give Antwerp a 3-9 lead. Wes Wilkinson and Broyles answered from downtown while a layup by Jerry Johnson gave Spirou a 15-13 edge. A layup by Len Matela kept Spirou ahead, 17-15, after 10 minutes. Andre Riddick shined with consecutive dunks while a three-pointer by Sacha Massot boosted the hosts' lead to 30-21. Christophe Beghin stepped up for Antwerp while free throw accuracy and a final layup by Lynch brought the guests within 39-33 at halftime. Broyles and Wlash nailed respective triples in a 10-0 run that broke the game open, 49-33, after the break. Antwerp did not recover, as Charleroi boosted its lead to 67-43 with 5 minutes to go and cruised to a well-deserved win.
