Slovenian League, Season 2009-10
The Slovenian League returns with the same format as past seasons with a dozen teams set to compete in a 22-game regular season and the top seven advancing to a second phase, where defending champion Union Olimpija joins the fray. Olimpija remains the team to beat in Slovenia and it promises to be even stronger this year with the likes of Sani Becirovic, Uros Slokar, Matt Walsh and Gasper Vidmar joining Vlado Ilievski, Vladimir Golubovic and Saso Ozbolt. Its main rival is Helios Domzale, which brings back Alvin Snow, Alexei Lashkevich, Domen Zerak and Ziga Zagorc and added Mario Dundovic. Among the other contenders to challenge Olimpija in the playoffs are Elektra Esotech, Krka Novo Mesto, Geoplin Slovan and Zlatorog Lasko. Elektra brought in Tadej Kostomaj to team with returnees Dejan Cup and Tadej Horvat. Krka returns the core of last season’s team with Simon Petrov, Davor Marcelic, Jure Balazic and Bojan Krivec. Geoplin Slovan lost its top three scorers from last season, but kept Zoran Dragic and Dejan Cigoja and added Ernest Novak and Luka Marolt. And Zlatorog looks to leader Nejc Strnad and Miljan Goljovic to turn some heads. Hopsi Polzela could also make a challenge if last season’s star, Shawn King, makes a successful return from a knee injury. Ultimately, they will all be targeting Olimpija for the Slovenian crown.
