USL result, Day 1: Euroleague 76-74 CBA
|
The opening game of the ULEB Summer League, a thriller that went down to the last seconds, has been won by the Euroleague free agent team by 76-74 over the team representing the Chinese Basketball Association. Quinton Day drove for a layup, drew the foul and hit the free throw to break a 73-73 tie with 5.7 seconds left for Euroleague. Leon Rodgers, an ULEB Cup star last season with Dutch League champions EiffelTowers, poured in 22 points for the winners. For CBA, Benton Rivers was the big gun with 32 points, shooting 7 for 19 on two-pointers and 5 for 9 on threes. The CBA team was without its Chinese players, who were delayed due to travel problems but are expected to join the team for Friday's game. Day also had 7 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 steals for Euroleague, while Martin Samarco scored 12 points and Jure Balazic 11. For CBA, Arturs Stalbergs had a double-double of 10 points and 11 rebounds, while Triantafyilos Tzakopoulos had 12. The Euroleague team enjoyed slight leads throughout the game, until Rivers started the final quarter with a pair of triples for CBA. That got the competitive urge going on both sides. Rogers answered with 5 points in a row and an assist to take back the board for Euroleague at 63-60. Back and forth they went until a great driving layup by Rivers put CBA back ahead, 70-73 with 53.1 seconds left. An offensive rebound and timeout led to Samarco getting free for the game-tying three-pointer. CBA tried a timeout with 14 seconds left, but only 4 left on the shot clock, and couldn't get the shot off. That set up Day's driving basket to decide the outcome.
