USL result, Day 1: Benetton Treviso 108-110 Zalgiris Kaunas
|
Appropriately enough, day one of the ULEB Summer League was extended to a double-overtime finish before one proud ULEB club, Zalgiris Kaunas, outlasted another, Benetton Treviso, 108-110 in the last of four games on Thursday in Jesolo, Italy. Vytenis Jasikevicius, brother of Sarunas, led the winners with 23 points. Arturas Milaknis followed him with 22 points, including 5 triples, among them the go-ahead shot in the second OT. Tadas Klimavicius added 15 points, Gediminas Maceina 13 and Mantas Kanietis 11. For Benetton, John Gilchrist pumped in 30. Pavel Mroz came next with 21, Tyler Smith had 15 and 11 rebounds, Wojciek Barycz another 15 points and Ron Slay 10. It was another tug-of-war, the third of the day, as Zalgiris surged ahead early, 13-26 after one quarter, behind the exploits of guards Kalnietis and Maceina. Benetton got behind its own speedy guard, John Gilchrist, to swing the scoreboard around in the middle quarters, when a 13-2 run allowed the hosts to take a 68-53 advantage into the final one. Zalgiris blasted back with a rain of three-ponters by Arturas Milaknis in a 7-27 fourth-quarter run to lead by 75-81 with 3 minutes left. Now it was the turn of Benetton, which looked to Polish big men Barycz and Mroz to get close, while Gilchrist hit the free throws to force OT. Then it was more of the same, with Mroz and Jasikevicius duelled until this time Milaknis drilled the game-tying foul shots. In the second OT, Gilchrist seemed to win it for Benetton with a three-pointer, steal and dunk for a 104-100 lead with a minute to go, but soon Milaknis drilled from the arc for a 104-105 advantage that Zalgiris would not relinquish.
