|
The homegrown young stars of Zalgiris Kaunas shot to the top of their ULEB Summer League group with a second victory on Friday by defeating the ULEB Cup free agent team 88-72. A stellar performance by 20-year-old point guard Mantas Kalnietis paced Zalgiris to victory. Kalnietis ran the show from the start and finished with 27 points, 8 assists, 2 rebounds and 2 steals. He had a power partner in forward Tadas Klimavicius, who poured in 13 points and dominated the boards to the tune of 17 rebounds. Vytenis Jasikevicius followed them with 11 points, 4 rebounds and 3 steals. The Zalgiris defense was just as impressive, allowing only Yassin Idbihi, with 20 points, to reach double digits for the ULEB Cup team. There was no warning, with the ULEB Cup team leading 13-15 midway through the first quarter, that Zalgiris was about to take control. That came with a 19-4 blast in which Jasikevicius starred that left Zalgiris ahead 32-19 after one quarter. ULEB Cup battled back within 27-32 before a Kalnietis three-pointer sparked a 12-2 run on the way to a 37-50 halftime score. ULEB Cup again rallied after the break, as Idbihi and Djordje Komdinic filled a 6-18 run to pull their team within 61-64 after three quarters. Zalgiris rode the scoring of Kalnietis, Klimavicius and Milaknis to another quick run to open the fourth and managed the lead to the finish.
