The Club
Asvel Basket is back in the Euroleague after four seasons following a solid 2008-09 season in which the club regained the French League crown. One of the best teams in French basketball history, Asvel Basket has its sights set high as it returns to the premier competition in Europe. Although the club's glory days came with 15 domestic championships in just 33 seasons between 1949 and 1981, Asvel has stayed among its country's elite clubs till the present. In the 1990s, Asvel won several cups and made the 1997 Euroleague semifinals while reaching the French League finals in five out of six seasons. The elusive domestic title finally arrived in spring of 2002 as Asvel roared through the French League playoffs and swept archrivals Pau-Orthez in the finals to earn its first domestic crown in 12 years. That success carried over to the 2002-03 Euroleague season as Asvel advanced to the Top 16. Subsequent tries at the French League title were not successful, but Asvel did well enough to stay in the Euroleague for several seasons before making its ULEB Cup debut in 2005-06, reaching the quarterfinals. Asvel made the ULEB Cup elimination rounds in the 2007-08 season, but missed the Last 16 by a single point. Similarly, it fell a victory short of reaching the French League title game, but certainly earned its way into the Eurocup. Last season Asvel came out with a new look after hiring a new head coach, Vincent Collet, to run the show. Asvel shined at times in the Eurocup, including an impressive win over eventual champion Lietuvos Rytas, but wound up missing the Last 16 round on a tiebreaker. That disappointment didn’t keep the team down for long. Asvel finished the regular season in the French League atop the ladder and ousted 2005 champion Strasbourg and 2008 champion SLUC Nancy in the playoffs to reach the title game. Then veteran Amara Sy led the charge as Asvel downed Orleans in the single game final in Paris to claim its 17th French League crown. The triumph also secured the club a return to the Euroleague where Asvel will surely use its hunger, experience and devoted basketball fans to make some noise as this proud club looks to rebuild its reputation among the best teams on the continent with an eye on getting back to challenging for more trophies every year.
