The Club
One of the teams that changed European basketball history is Bosnian powerhouse KK Bosna, now ready to make its ULEB Cup debut. On April 4, 1979, Bosna became the first team from the former Yugoslav to win the Euroleague title, opening the door for teams like Cibona, Split or Partizan to continue that legacy. Zarko Varajic had 45 points, the most ever in a Euroleague final, while Bosnian basketball legend Mirza Delibasic added 30 to lead Bosna to a 96-93 win against mighty Varese in the 1979 Euroleague title game. Founded in 1951, Bosna had to wait until 1972 to promote to the first Yugoslav division. Soon after that, Delibasic joined the first team and soon became a European superstar. He got some help from Ratko Radovanovic and Varajic to help Bosna lift the 1978 Yugoslav title. Few people expected Bosna to reach high in the 1979 Euroleague, but the team survived the group stage over Maccabi Elite and Real Madrid before downing Varese in the grand final. Bosna would add two more Yugoslav titles in 1980 and 1983, the latter already without Delibasic. That marked the end of an era, however, as no more titles came until Bosnia and Herzegovina became independent. Bosna won the Bosnian League in 1999, its first title in 16 years. The team did even better in 2005, as Bosna won both the Bosnian League and the Bosnian Cup titles with players like Lance Williams, Nenad Markovic or Sasa Vasiljevic. Bosna conquered its third Bosnian League title in 2006, downing archrivals Siroki in the final. Last season, however, Siroki took revenge, stealing the home court advantage in the title series. Bosna starts a new era with its ULEB Cup appearance, backed by thousands of diehard fans in the Mirza Delibasic Arena.
