The Club
With three top-four finishes in the French League in the past five years, Elan Chalon has established itself as one of France's most ambitious clubs. Chalon already has two years of ULEB Cup experience under its belt, but now it arrives to the ULEB Cup following one its most successful domestic campaign to date. The club Chalon was formed in 1970 when it began participating in France's National 4 League. After two decades of amateur competition, Chalon's professional division was established in 1994 and by 1996 the club was already participating in France's first division. Chalon's first achievement was its qualification for the Saporta Cup after finishing fourth in the French League in 1998-99. In 2000-01, Chalon showed great improvement by arriving to the Saporta Cup final, where the team, led Andre Owens, Robert Gulyas or Stanley Jackson, lost to Maroussi of Greece. Chalon made the French playoffs for a fourth consecutive season in 2001-02 when it finished in fourth place, but took a step backwards in 2002-03 when it fell to 10th in its domestic campaign. The 2003-04 season was a banner one for Chalon, however, as it rebounded to finish third - its highest placement in 8 years of French League play, losing against Pau-Orthez during the semifinals. The team could not advance to the 2004-05 ULEB Cup elimination rounds despiet posting a respectble 5-5 ULEB Cup record. Chalon returned to the French League semifinals that year, where it lost to Nancy, and then bounced back from a slow 2005-06 season this year. Chalon brought in players like Jermaine Guice, Terell Everett or Geoff Lear and was third at the end of the regular season before losing to eventual champion Roanne. As a young club hungry to further its reputation as an emerging power, as well as a ULEB Cup veteran ready to do well, the future seems bright for Chalon.
