The head coach: Ergin Ataman
Ergin Ataman Already among Europe's most accomplished young coaches, Besiktas Cola Turka boss Ergin Ataman has a chance at the Final Eight in Turin to cement his reputation as a standard-bearer for his generation and country. Ataman started coaching in the Efes Pilsen youth system at age 23, and within two years not only was heading that program but also doubling as senior team assistant. Over five seasons in that role, Ataman helped Efes win four Turkish League titles as well as the 1996 Korac Cup. He worked the next two years as Turk Telekom’s head coach before spending one season as a Stanford University assistant. Back in Turkey, a short stop at Pinar Karsiyaka ended when he returned and led Efes to back-to-back Final Fours, the 2000 Euroleague and the 2001 SuproLeague, finishing third both times. Ataman next moved to Italy and won the 2002 Saporta Cup with Montepaschi Siena, which the following season became just the second Euroleague debut team to reach a Final Four. Nearly three seasons at Ulker and a spell at Climamio Bologna ensued before Ataman joined Besiktas last season. After they registered the first unbeaten ULEB Cup regular season ever, no one should underestimate what Ataman and Besiktas can accomplish in Turin.
