The head coach: Aco Petrovic
Arriving in midseason to a team falling short of high expectations is among the most difficult of coaching challenges. From the time he took over the Unics Kazan bench, however, Aco Petrovic has managed a turnaround like no other in the 2007-08 ULEB Cup. Petrovic and Unics have climbed together as though they were meant for each other. It’s true that Petrovic knew plenty about Unics from two-plus seasons coaching one of its Russian League opponents, Lokomotiv Rostov. He also knew plenty about the ULEB Cup after guiding FMP of his native Serbia to the 2003 quarterfinals, being assistant coach for Red Star and heading the bench of Hemofarm Vrsac, which he took to the 2004 domestic league finals. The next season, Petrovic moved to Rostov and brought the Russian club to the FIBA EuroCup Challenge final, losing there to CSU Asesoft. Among his non-club accolades, Petrovic won a gold medal as assistant coach for the 2002 world champion Yugoslav national team. Now, the Final Eight gives another coach in the great Serbian tradition the chance to grab his first club title.
