The star: Darjus Lavrinovic
Darjus Lavrinovic More than halfway through the ULEB Cup regular season, Unics Kazan shared last place in its group and had to figure out how to survive. As it turned out, the return from injury of big man Darjus Lavrinovic was just what the basketball doctors ordered. With a rare combination of shooting, rebounding and shot-blocking skills, Lavrinovic has done nothing but improve during a decade-long career. He has been both an all-Euroleague second team choice and blocked shots leader, not to mention a Lithuanian League and Baltic League title winner. He also helped Unics reach the ULEB Cup semifinals last season before losing to eventual champ Real Madrid. Once back to health this season, Lavrinovic showed that he would not let Unics fail. He has posted index ratings of 29 or higher in half of his eight games so far, and on given nights has scored 22 points, pulled 16 rebounds, blocked 6 shots or dished 5 assists. In other words, Lavrinovic can do it all. If he meets the moment in Turin, too, Unics could enjoy a long Final Eight weekend.
