| As one of the winningest teams in the ULEB Cup since first joining the competition three seasons ago, it comes as little surprise that Unics Kazan arrives in Turin for the Final Eight as a title contender. After acing its regular season group in 2006 and reached the semifinals last season, Unics is a true powerhouse in the competition. Unics is one of the younger clubs in the ULEB Cup. Arriving in midseason to a team falling short of high expectations is among the most difficult of coaching challenges. From the time he took over the Unics Kazan bench, however, Aco Petrovic has managed a turnaround like no other in the 2007-08 ULEB Cup. Petrovic and Unics have climbed together as though they were meant for each other. THE STAR: DARJUS LAVRINOVIC

More than halfway through the ULEB Cup regular season, Unics Kazan shared last place in its group and had to figure out how to survive. As it turned out, the return from injury of big man Darjus Lavrinovic was just what the basketball doctors ordered. With a rare combination of shooting, rebounding and shot-blocking skills, Lavrinovic has done nothing but improve during a decade-long career.
