Hapoel Jerusalem 2009-10 profile
Hapoel JerusalemHapoel Migdal Jerusalem will try to make it to the Eurocup for the sixth time in club history this season. The Eurocup is a competition that is dear to the hearts of the club’s legions of diehard fans. Hapoel rewrote European basketball history with one of the greatest postseason runs in history, as it beat Prokom, Lietuvos Rytas and Reflex en route to the 2004 ULEB Cup title game. Then Hapoel pulled off a historic victory by trumping Real Madrid in the final at Charleroi, winning its first European trophy. Throughout its history, Hapoel has taken a back seat in Israel to archrival Maccabi Elite Tel Aviv, but in the ULEB Cup it found a competition where it could prove that Israeli basketball goes well beyond one name. Success is nothing new to Hapoel. The club was crowned the Israeli Cup winner in 1996, 1997, 2007 and 2008. In Europe, Hapoel has done a lot for Israeli basketball, too, appearing in Korac Cup and Saporta competitions throughout the 1990s, not to mention joining the new Euroleague in its debut season, 2000-01. Hapoel reached the Saporta Cup quarterfinals in 1996 and made the semifinals in 2002 before losing to eventual champ Siena. Hapoel also made it to the ULEB Cup semifinals in 2006, losing to eventual champs Dynamo Moscow. Last season was an anomaly, as it failed to make any noise in Europe and lost in the Israeli Cup and League semifinals. Nevertheless it will be ready as ever this season with a chance to return to the Eurocup on the line.
