Germani Brescia Leonessa returns to the 7DAYS EuroCup for a second straight season hoping to build on the lessons learned from its debut campaign in any pan-European competition. Led by Jordan Hamilton, Awudu Abass and David Moss, Brescia had to wait until Round 4 for its first EuroCup win, but what a victory it was! Brescia downed Crvena Zvezda mts Belgrade 69-61 and for the first time in either the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague or the EuroCup, Zvezda had more points in the first quarter (31) than in the next 30 minutes (30). Brescia managed to beat AS Monaco on the road and Galatasaray Istanbul at home, but home losses against MoraBanc Andorra and ratiopharm Ulm prevented the team from reaching the Top 16. Playing a European competition for the first time caused Brescia to pay a high price in domestic action. Brescia did not make it to the Italian Cup and missed the Italian League playoffs by a narrow margin after losing four of its last six regular season games. Brescia has grown in stature in recent years and has the chance to take another leap by using last season's experience as a stepping stone.

History

The youngest club in the competition this season, Germani Brescia Leonessa was founded in 2009 and will be competing in its 11th campaign - and second in the 7DAYS EuroCup. Brescia is the second-largest city in the Lombardy region, behind only Milan, with a population of 200,000, but had been without professional basketball for some 13 years after Basket Brescia folded, so local fans were ready to embrace the new club when it was born. Brescia acquired the rights from Cremona to begin competing in the Serie A amateur division and needed only two years to master it. When Brescia bested Trapani in the 2011 playoff finals, it earned a ticket to the second division as the amateur champion. Brescia was a strong competitor even as it climbed the ladder, finishing seventh in its first season and fourth in 2013. A year later Brescia earned its way into Serie A2. In the 2015-16 season, Brescia finished the regular season in second place with a 21-9 record and had to work hard with all four of its playoff series going the distance, but ultimately it eliminated Trapani, Tortona, Scafati and finally Fortitudo Bologna to become the 2016-17 Serie A2 champions and clinch a spot in the top league. Naturally, the goal was to avoid the relegation zone and with league-leading scorer Marcus Landry and the league's top assist man Luca Vitali taking charge, Brescia finished 10th and reached the Italian Cup semifinals. In the 2017-18 season, Brescia reached new heights as it occupied first place for much of the regular season, reached the playoffs and won a series, and advanced to the Italian Cup final. After knocking off Virtus Bologna and Red October Cantu, Brescia fought hard in the Italian Cup final, but in a thriller that went to the wire, Turin won 69-67 on a Sasha Vujacic game-winner. In the Italian League playoffs, Brescia swept Varese in the quarterfinals before taking Game 1 of the semifinals 82-85 over AX Armani Exchange Olimpia Milan on the road. Milan rebounded to win the next three games, but there was no taking away from a historic campaign for Brescia. Last season, Brescia played the 2018-19 EuroCup, its first experience in European competition. Expect the team to be hungrier than ever in this promising 2019-20 campaign.
