With its basketball section dating to 1928, AS Monaco boasts a long tradition in the sport. The team’s first major achievement came in 1950 with a second-place finish in the French top flight. After a few fallow years, Monaco returned to the first division by winning the topping the second tier in 1973. That decade also saw Monaco's first foray into international competition with a couple of Korac Cup outings, as well its first chance for a major trophy, frustrated by a loss to Limoges in the French Federation Cup Final in 1983. Monaco then suffered a dramatic slide in fortunes, dropping as far as the fourth division until a remarkable revival in the last few years. The club conquered the fourth, third and, finally, second divisions between 2012 and 2015 to rejoin the French first tier. The 2015-16 campaign finally saw the red-and-white side claim its first serious title with a triumph in the Leaders Cup, a trophy it defended the following year. The 2017-18 season was Monaco's strongest yet, with a third consecutive Leaders Cup trophy complemented by runner-up finishes in both the French League and Basketball Champions League. The following season saw Monaco make its 7DAYS EuroCup debut in style, winning its regular season group and reaching the final game of the Top 16 needing a win to reach the quarterfinals. Monaco fell at the hands of Rytas Vilnius, and suffered more disappointment in the fifth-and-deciding game of the French playoff finals, where it lost to LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne. In 2019-20 Monaco advanced from the regular season in the EuroCup and then took first place in its Top 16 Group G to lock up home-court advantage in the quarterfinals, which ended up not being played due to the COVID-19 pandemic. For the 2020-21 campaign, Monaco brought back as head coach Zvezdan Mitrovic, who had guided the club’s promotion to the French League in 2015. And it proved to be a triumphant return, as the club gained its first-ever continental title by defeating UNICS Kazan in the EuroCup Finals, also securing progression into the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague for the very first time.
