Letter from the Mayor of the City of Cologne

Dear basketball fans,

A very special premiere lies ahead of us: this year, for the first time ever, Cologne is host to the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague Final Four. This is the final tournament for the most important title in European club basketball. It has international appeal and therefore is an absolute highlight in Cologne's sports year.

I am very pleased that the EuroLeague – after having had to cancel the event last year – has decided to host the Final Four in Cologne in 2021. This is particularly meaningful for Lanxess Arena, which suffered financially due to the necessary lockdown regulations of the corona pandemic. It is a great pity that such a significant international sporting event cannot be held in front of an enthusiastic audience. Especially for thousands of basketball fans from all over Europe who would have come to Cologne for a fantastic weekend. We all feel their absence and cannot wait for their return.

I strongly believe that the EuroLeague Final Four 2021 will be a special and hopefully one-off experience – at least when it comes to the lockdown consequences to the final. I wish all participating teams sporting success in a fair and exciting competition. And I am sending out my best wishes to everyone who is passionate about basketball, the clubs and all the fans out there. I hope that we will see each other here in Cologne to celebrate and share sportive highlights again in the future.
