Sometimes a player must decide whether he wants to be a big fish in a small pond or a small fish in a big pond. Anadolu Efes Istanbul forward Tolga Gecim knew he wanted to do whatever it takes to compete at the highest level, even if that meant taking on a smaller role.
The 25-year-old forward played a small part for Efes in the first half of the season – and even started his team's Round 5 fixture against LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne. However, when Efes's roster returned to full strength, Gecim was relegated to a support role and did not dress at all in the EuroLeague Playoffs or Final Four.
Even though minutes were tough to come by for Gecim in the EuroLeague, Coach Ergin Ataman counted on him as an integral part of his rotation in the Turkish League. He averaged double figures in minutes in Efes's eight Turkish League playoff games, highlighted by a 9-point, 4-assist performance in the semifinals clincher against Besiktas Istanbul. He finished the season as a EuroLeague champion and a Turkish league champion and still has plenty of basketball ahead of him.
